- McKay surrendered only an infield single with eight strikeouts and four walks
in eight scoreless innings on Friday night to improve to 7-3 on the season and
28-10 in his collegiate career. This week's outing marked the second time in
four starts the junior lefthander has allowed just one hit in eight shutout innings
after achieving the feat in a victory at Georgia Tech on April 13. Through 11
starts and 75.0 innings pitched this season, McKay has a 1.92 ERA and 103
strikeouts while opposing batters are hitting just .160 overall.
Floridagators
- The Friday night pitching matchup between two of the Southeastern
Conference's top aces -- James McArthur of Ole Miss and Florida's Alex Faedo --
lived up to its billing until the fourth inning of the Gators' 11-2 win. McArthur,
a 6-foot-7 right-hander and reigning SEC Pitcher of the Week, retired the first
10 Gators he faced but ran into a mess in the fourth as the Gators broke a
scoreless tie with seven runs in the inning, highlighted by Ryan Larson's grand
slam. The breakout inning was ample support for Faedo, who tossed six shutout
innings. Faedo struck out nine, walked three and gave up three hits to improve
to 7-1, tying Jackson Kowar for the team lead in victories.
12thman
- Head Coach Rob Childress On Corbin Martin's pitching tonight… "He was
much better as he got going. Early in the game, I didn't do him any favors as
far as managing how we were pitching to guys. I'll take full blame for that,
but he did a nice job keeping it together. We gave up a two-out run in the
second, a two-out run in the seventh and off they went. We gave them a free one
there in the ninth with three free base runners but all-in-all, I thought he
managed things quite well. It could've gotten away from him early."
NCAA
- Gamecock right-hander Wil Crowe allowed just two runs on five hits in 4.1
innings with three walks in his 12th start of the season for the Gamecocks.
NCAA A three-run second inning and 4.2 scoreless
innings of relief by Josh Reagan and Tyler Johnson highlighted a 3-2 win for
25th ranked South Carolina over 11th ranked LSU on Friday night at Alex Box
Stadium. The Gamecocks improve to 27-17 and 11-11 in the SEC with LSU now 30-16
and 13-9 in league play. Reagan earned the win in relief with three scoreless
innings of working allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two
batters. He is now 5-1 on the year. Johnson pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of
work to earn his eighth save of the year. LSU starting pitcher Alex Lange went
the distance for LSU allowing three runs on five hits in nine innings with two
walks and five strikeouts. He is now 5-5 on the year.
Goxavier
- Despite 11 strikeouts and a dominant start by Zac Lowther, Xavier baseball
fell in a 1-0 game with the Indiana Hoosiers on Friday. The game-deciding run
came on a third inning solo shot for IU. Lowther was incredible again, striking
out eleven batters in six one-run frames, but it was not enough for the
Musketeers. Xavier put runners on first and second in the eighth, but the rally
ended on a strikeout following a pitching change.
USCB
- UC Santa Barbara freshman second baseman Armani Smith and junior left-hander
Kyle Nelson each turned in standout performances to lead UC Santa Barbara past
UC Davis 6-3 in Friday's Big West series opener at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium,
giving head coach Andrew Checketts his milestone 200th career win. Nelson led
the way for UCSB (20-22, 6-7 Big West) on the mound with a 118-pitch complete
game, the first of his career. The southpaw held the Aggies (13-24, 5-11) off
the board for eight of their nine at-bats, striking out six while allowing just
a pair of earned runs.
