Is Josh Smoker going to be coming back? Wait, the Mets must actually disable the man before they can make a move. Playing shorthanded is particularly risky in the bullpen when the Skipper uses 8 pitchers in a 9 inning game.

Gilmartin did his Montero impression (or was it the other way around) when he was here...Tyler Pill is the one doing the best even though that's as a starter. Of course, they can't promote him because he's not on the 40-man roster, though you could make a case for Erik Goeddel or Rafael Montero or Sean Gilmartin being booted off of it.
Knowing the Mets, they'll promote Smoker once they disable Familia, then, after surgery they may finally acquiesce and put him on the 60-day DL thus opening a roster spot.
Sewald, McGowan, Peterson, Baldonado are in house candidates for a 7th inning slot, move Reed to close and Robles to 8th inning.

Familia will most definitely go on the DL. This is a serious injury and, if it leads to surgery, he could be done for the season.

Actually, Tom, it was Albert King who first recorded "Born Under a Bad Sign" that contains those lyrics. Does being a Mets fan make me a blues aficionado or is it the other way around?
ReplyDeleteCertainly it will be Reed 9th, Robles 8th, probably Salas 7th since Terry Collins can't wrap his head around the concept that lefties can be relievers against right handed batters, too. I'd advocate Sewald over Salas, but the sample size has been way too small for the (and I use this term loosely) braintrust to consider that option. Salas has been awful thus far -- Smoker level awful.
Oh, and Baldonado is kind of in the same boat as Roseboom -- dominant at AA but then has to face pitching hell in Vegas.

ReplyDeletebig Al Baldonado in 15.2 IP has 23 Ks, no runs, 8 hits and 4 walks allowed. I'd skip him past Vegas and give him a shot - ease him in like they have with Sewald.
Reese, remember that Collins, rather than giving Familia a night off Tuesday after pitching Monday, and with a day game Wednesday, used him Tuesday night despite a 6-1 lead in the 9th that Sewald could have handled (Sewald does, after all, have 70 career saves in the minors, so he is no stranger to the 9th inning). Could pitching Familia 3 times in 2 and a half days have triggered this problem? Very possibly. if so, it is another big Collins dividend.

I'll always have a fond spot for another Albert -- Collins -- the only Collins I respect. His "Too Many Dirty Dishes" is both funny and great blues, plus his appearance in "Adventures in Babysitting" is a scene that forces me to stop and watch anytime it comes on TV.
