2nd-rder Mark Vientos signs w/@Mets for $1.5 mil (pick 59 value=$1,094,700). HS SS can move to 3b and fit offensive profile there

Vientos entered the spring as one of the more intriguing high school bats in the country, one who many thought had first-round potential. An up-and-down spring has made him a bit more of a polarizing prospect than that, with opinions on him varying greatly. Vientos' offensive potential is what had scouts interested in the first place, so if you saw him when he was swinging the bat well, you like him. He hasn't done that as consistently as some would have liked to see. He does show good bat speed and has definite power potential from the right side of the plate. Vientos isn't overly athletic, so even though he plays shortstop for his

Youngest prospect in the draft - doesn't turn 18 until December
Hit .417 with 1 HR in 24 games this spring.
Manny Machado comp: MLB.com's profile of Vientos included a comp that should open eyes among Mets fans: Manny Machado. While much of that is likely due to both being right-handed hitting shortstops from the Miami area, it's exciting.
Betting on youth: Vientos is only 17 years old. With a December 11, 1999 birthday, he'll play his first professional season as a 17-year-old in the Mets system and not start his 18-year-old campaign until 2018. That means two things: We're talking about a player way ahead of the curve, but also one that requires patience . Don't expect Vientos in Queens anytime soon.
Not overly athletic: Although Vientos played shortstop at American Heritage, he's expected to move over to third base in the pros.Mets' 1st round pick
High ceiling: According to Minor League Ball's scouting report, we're talking about a player with a ceiling high enough to take a chance on with a high pick. The Mets were the team to do it.
It seems likely that Vientos' youth and bat will be too much for teams to pass up at the top of the draft and that he won't get to college. The exact shape his abilities will take down the line is uncertain, but the ceiling is certainly high enough to be worth a gamble.

Hopefully he's as good as they say?
ReplyDeleteI like the 1st 2 picks!
ReplyDeleteI a sure fire starter with back of the rotation stuff, who throws a lot of groundballs, and doesn't walk anyone.
Be a great addition when this team has an above average fielding SS?
The other a player with a lot of potential who can slowly build his way up the ladder!
Hey Mack why spend FA money on Machado when you have a 17 yearold Manny
The reason you spend on Machado is be is a proven talent.
ReplyDeleteA 17 year old is a proven nobody until proven wrong.
That being said, I love the pick... I had him as the 2nd 3Bman behind Burger in the draft... but... he will easily be 4-5 years away.
I was a little disappointed that they didn't take the blazing fast CFer from McClancy HS (always root for the local kids) but grabbing a high-ceiling HS bat is good enough. The kid should be ready just in time for the expiration of DW's contract, so should be a smooth transition for the club at 3B. 😏
ReplyDeleteWon't this kid turn 30 when Wrights contract ends? :)
DeleteBig kid. Maybe he will become our Aaron Judge. You can't coach someone to get "taller"
ReplyDeleteWho is DW??
ReplyDeleteForgotten what a shame
No Smith was a better pick than Judge??
Said nobody

Yanks had 3 first round picks that draft. And drafted Judge with their 3rd first round pick. I think every team passed on Judge, including the Yankees. Safe to say they wouldn't have drafted him without the luxury of a 3rd first round pick. So....
ReplyDeleteMonday morning quarterbacking the ML draft is ridiculous. The ML draft is a crapshoot, most fans know that.
And, Smith is nearly 4 years younger than Judge. Nobody knows where Smith will be when he's 25. In 2021....
Today's signing of Viento is cause for celebration. Let's now see how the rest of the draft signings shake out.
ReplyDeleteHe's only 17, so he should be ready the same week that DW comes off the DL.
ReplyDelete@ Adam Smith - ha ha!
ReplyDeleteA few teams passed on mike trout too....
ReplyDeleteGood to see them go overslot to get a hs kid they wanted with upside signed. The college senior drafted after are the way the game is played. Lets see if we can get one or two of those other high ceiling hs players who dropped signed too.
