Tom Brennan - NO WAY OUT?

Five St. Lucie Mets have been voted onto the 2017 Florida State League South Division All Star Team.

Third baseman Jhoan Urena, first baseman Patrick Mazeika, outfielder Wuilmer Becerra, outfielder Jeff Diehl and relief pitcher Tyler Bashlor and have been selected to represent the Mets.

The 56th FSL All Star Game will be played Saturday, June 17 at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla.

Urena and Mazeika ranked in the top 10 in the FSL in several offensive categories. Though 53 games, Urena is hitting .325 (4th FSL). His on-base percentage is .412 (5th FSL) and he is tied for second in the league with 17 doubles. His 62 hits rank second in the FSL.

Urena, 22, is playing in his third season with St. Lucie and is putting together his best season. He resides in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

Mazeika was atop the FSL in the batting average standings for a stretch in May. He is batting .314 through 53 games (T-6th FSL) and his 35 RBIs lead the Mets and are fifth in the league. Mazeika hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the 13th of Wednesday’s 6-5 win over Daytona.

Mazeika, 23, was born in Massachusetts. The Mets selected him in the eighth round of the 2015 draft out of Stetson, the same school as current Mets ace Jacob deGrom.

Becerra makes the FSL All Star team for the second straight year. He is batting .265 with seven doubles, three home runs and 23 RBIs in 49 games as a DH and outfielder. After last year’s All Star appearance Becerra shut his season down and underwent shoulder surgery.

Becerra, 22, hails from Caracas, Venezuela. He was acquired by the Mets along with Noah Syndergaard and Travis d’Arnaud in a trade the sent R.A. Dickey to the Blue Jays in 2012. The Mets added Becerra to their 40-man roster in the offseason.

Diehl got off to a hot start but has been on the 7-day disabled list since May 14th with a back injury. In 29 games Diehl is hitting .280 with five doubles, three home runs and 15 RBIs. He has also made two emergency relief appearances on the mound. On April 17 at Dunedin he hit 96 mph and stranded the tying run on third base in the eighth inning to help preserve an 11-10 win.

Diehl, 23, was picked by the Mets in the 23rd round of the 2011 draft out of Cranston High School in Rhode Island.

Bashlor has been a strikeout machine in his late innings role with St. Lucie. In 17 relief appearances spanning 19 innings Bashlor has 35 strikeouts. His is 5 for 5 in save opportunities. He owns a 1-0 record with a 2.84 ERA.

Bashlor, 24, is from Springfield, Ga. He missed the 2014 and 2015 seasons with injury. Bashlor was selected by the Mets in the 11th round of the 2013 draft out of South Georgia College.

  1. I have long been a Fan of Urena--his early stats and some vidoe sold me--then he flailed for a year or so. He can be a stick
