Mack - My Prediction For The All-Star Break

We're about the go into the mid-season all star break where only one of our Mets... a player our own front office wanted him in the minors this season...is on the all-star team.

These are my predict regarding what I expect the Mets will look like when the trading season is over:

1. I expect some of our expiring contracts to be gone because they have an immediate value to a competing team... 1B Lucas Duda, IF Astrubel Cabrera, and RP Addison Reed will be traded for level AA/A+ medium grade prospects, a good move by the Mets to bolster their pipeline. Emphasis on these additions will be on the positions of catcher, second base, third base, center field, starting pitching and relief pitching.

2. There will be no market for IF Jose Reyes, who will be released.

3. RF Jay Bruce will not be traded and the Mets will begin negotiations with his reps to structure a new contract for him for the next two or three seasons.

4.  C Rene Rivera will not be traded and the Mets will begin negotiations with his reps to structure a new contract for him in 2018.

5. There will be no market for 2B Neil Walker, RP Fernando Salas, SP Tommy Milone, or OF Curtis Granderson. They will remain a Met until the end of the season.

6. 1B Dominic Smith, SS Amed Rosario, and RP Kyle Regnault will be promoted from AAA-Las Vegas to the New York Mets.

  1. Morning, Mack

On June 15, Jose Reyes was at .184, inches from the discard pile.

Since then he is 22 for 68 (.324), and in his prime days he once had a stretch of over 80 at bats without a strikeout; he has fanned just twice in his last 14 games, So he has experienced a real revival.

If Kelly Johnson was attractive to us in 2015, Reyes HAS to be attractive to someone now.

Similarly, Curtis Granderson in June had to be in the Top 3 in the NL for Player of the month (won by McCutcheon). Grandy had a .711 slug %. Again, the comp to Kelly Johnson circa 2015. Grandy to me is more attractive if the Mets ate some of his remaining $7.5 million owed thru year end.

I agree with you otherwise, except if Walker returned 100% healthy before the end of July AND some team needed a solid 2B, he could be gone too if we ate part of his remaining $8 million.

  2. It has never been in the Mets' DNA to eat salary but it makes good business sense to do so to increase the level of prospect(s) coming back in return in trade. Unfortunately given the horrific judge of talent the current regime has proven to be, I doubt that's going to change now.

Another thing not in the Mets' collective DNA is negotiating contracts when they have the exclusive in-season window to do so. I can't see that happening either. Consequently I think Jay Bruce is on the market, too. I don't see much of a market for Rene Rivera. He's fine for a backup but not as a starter.

As long as Jose Reyes is around, if and when Amed Rosario gets here there will always be a temptation for the the Skipper to insert the old man in the lineup.

Reed and Duda are most definitely attractive. Cabrera is borderline.

  3. Morning, gentlemen. Question - why has there been more information on David Wright's health status than on Syndergaard or Harvey? Understanding that this year is 99.9% in the crapper, it is important to see these two pitch multiple starts before the end of 2017.

  4. TP -

The Mets consider releasing information on injuries in the same level as making the nuclear codes available to the general public.

You will hear something... here on Mack's Mets... when (or if) they start a rehab session.

  5. My crystal ball predicts this to happen

Duda and Reed to our crosstown rivals
    Bruce traded to Cubs
Familia and Cabrera are dealt to Dodgers or Red Sox in a bidding war
    Reyes to the Brewers
    Granderson traded to the Rays
DeGrom traded to Houston for a steep price

My crystal is a little foggy and doesn't tell me who they are traded for or why. So this prediction could be off by 99.9%?

  6. I think reed and bruce are the most likely to be traded. You lose nothing by trading bruce/reed in terms of re-signing them. The new rules say a qo only matters if he gets over $50 mm. Bruce also has the most value of the hitters. There is only really exciting catching prospect and he is in the Indians system. So thats who I want to target in order to get a long term asset back. Dont know if they want any of our players.

If you trade cabrera, theres no reason to release reyes as he would be a capable backup.

I still think the starting outfield next year is Ces/(lagares/nimmo)/Conforto.

the only places I can see granderson being traded are Brewers/Twins bc of the veteran leadership he would provide/playoff experience.

  7. I think that Reed has more value than a mid-level prospect. Reliable bullpen arms are gold to contending teams, and Reed makes any BP in the league a LOT better. I would expect a Top 50 type prospect for him. Granderson is an interesting case. You could argue that he's been one of the best hitters in baseball for two months now. It'll be interesting to see if they get a decent offer for him. It wouldn't entirely shock me, but we'll see. Bruce should have value, and while I see your argument, Mack, that they might just want to re-sign him, I think the critical factor is whether they can see clear to commiting to Conforto as a CF long-term (I think they'd rather not). Reyes stays, I think. As much as anything as a mentor to Rosario when he arrives. Duda only brings back real value if he's packaged with Reed. And, in fact, if I'm Sandy (and if I were, this team would be in better shape) my goal
Is to pair Reed with one of them position players (and even be willing to eat some salary) in an all-out effort to bring back an impact prospect.

  8. After seeing the Yanks showing interest in Justin Bour we should be calling them about Duda. Bour is gonna cost em big time and Lucas might be a better fit if our FO can get over dealing with the evil empire. Also as strange as it might seem their bullpen has been less than stellar lately and if their going for it we could include Reed or Blevins if the deal is right.
