Gary McDonald - This and That

David Wright played in a baseball game.  Now, that’s big news .  David hasn’t played in a game since May 2016 so this was a momentus occasion.  He was the designated hitter for the St. Lucie Mets  and went 0-4.  By the time you read this I would imagine he would have more at bats and hopefully some hits.  The big test will be if he can play third and throw the ball.  We don’t know that he can right now and ,if he is to return to the Mets he  must be able to play a defensive position.  This ain’t the American League and there  is no DH.  All good wishes go out to David on his comeback.

As Met fans we all held out a sliver of hope that Mets could put together a run in the second half, though we all knew it would be a longshot. Then came the Dodgers series, trade deadline, the post trade deadline moves  and we pretty much knew the season was over but, still you held out just a tiny sliver of hope that they could make the postseason. Then the series with the Yankees came and  showed us that this team is not ready to win and had no potential to put together a long winning streak, add to that the dumpings  of all the veterans and it shows that even the organization has given up on the season.  At least we get to see some young players up and getting major league experience.

Someone or ones will have to pay for this year.  If it was me Alderson would be gone,Warthen would be gone, training staff and methods revaluated and scrapped. And a total change of philosophy throughout the organization.  A philosophy based on fundamentals, making contact, taking the throw in the right position, throwing to the right base, bunting, and correct sliding methods. These things are all missing in today’s game.

Curtis Granderson was one of the best free agent signings the Mets ever made.  He was a team guy, loved in the clubhouse, good to the fans, durable, and put up consistent numbers .  Always willing to do what the manager wanted ,  he will go down as  an all time favorite Met.

We may yet get to see Matt Harvey, Jeurys Familia, Noah Syndergaard, and maybe even David Wright  play for the Mets this season.  It’s a little late but it will help them mentally for next year.

Until next time.

  1. The stunning news that if Conforto needs surgery (likely) and needs up to 12 months to rehab takes away the good feeling of Familia returning. 2018 already looked unclear, Conforto possibly missing most of it would further muddy the picture.

  2. You left out Terry Collins needing to leave. I won't pin the injuries on him, but he's demonstrated since day one he is pathetic when it comes to figuring out a lineup, managing a bullpen and motivating younger players. Don't the door hit you on the way out.

  3. My hope is that this "rehab" experiment convinces David that his career lies elsewhere. Of course he has to try in order to find out whether he can continuing doing what he obviously loves. I would expect nothing less from him.

I just hope he has a conclusion deadline that is a month or so away.

And I want him to stay in the organization too--coaching, managing or FO.

  5. I hope with David is this isn't one of those silly 2 or 3 game rehabs and then he comes up but I guess with the insurance policy $$$ on the line they'll wait as long as it takes until he can really play..well here's hoping.
