Mack's Morning Report - 9-25 - Pipeline Position Analysis - C

Red - Prospects
Blue - Second level Prospects

MLB - Mets -

The trading of Rene Rivera sort of cleared up who will be the two Mets catchers next season. Travis d'Arnaud and Kevin Plawecki should both be on the 25-man in 2018. A lot of you hope for someone outside the chain to be added here, but I expect these two guys will get the nod next season.

AAA - Las Vegas -

Tomas Nido - 23/yrs. old - 8th Rd. 2012 - Nido had a wonderful year in 2016 for St. Lucie, leading the league in hitting. What more can you ask for than a league leading hitter thant is also a freaking catcher! Well, the wheels fell off this year in Binghamton where Nido didn't shuffle (367-AB, .232). He needs to step up in 2018 in Vegas before others ride up his arse, starting with Patrick Mazeika in 2019.

Xorge Carillo - 28/yrs old - Rd. 14, 2011 - hit a respectful .270 in 252-ABs, but he was known for his tremendous arm and ability to throw out runners on second base, Still, his hitting is far inferior to both d'Arnaud and Plawecki and I see no road for him to Queens. Worse, here comes the prospects from Binghamton. I'll keep him in Vegas as my backup.

Jeff Glenn - 25/yrs. old - Rd. 9/2009 - every minor league team needs a third catch even if it's for nothing more than to keep on them on the inactive list and use them as a bullpen catcher. Glenn will never win a batting crown (AAA: .234), but he's a great guy and bleeds blue and orange.

AA - Binghamton -

Patrick Mazeika - 23/yrs. old - Rd. 8/2015 - played (in this order) catcher, first base, and DH - This may be the one guy that could develop into a future Mets catcher star. Has hit .311 over a three year minor league career but has a long way to go in developing power (15-HRs in 838-ABs, 858-OPS, but down from 991 in 2015 for Kingsport). Still, having Nido block him may be the best thing for him. Let him work on his total game in 2018 in New York State, let his bat go crazy in Vegas in 2019, and he could be in Flushing by the 2019 All-Star break.

  Colton Plaia - 26/yrs old - Rd. 15/2013 -

  Tyler Moore - 24/yrs old - Rd. 6/2014 -

A+ - St. Lucie -

Anthony Dimino - 24/yrs old - Rd. 28/2015 - Dimino had a killer season for St. Lucie, playing first base and catcher, hitting .317... and normally he would deserve a promotion to Binghamton... but why send him there only to sit behind a bigger prospect in Mazeika? No, he'll go back an start again for St. Lucie and wait his turn.

  Jose Garcia - 22/yrs. old - IFA -

Vincente Moscote - 23/yrs old - IFA - played for Kingsport and St. Lucie, hitting .203 in 74-ABs. The perfect third catcher.

A - Columbia -

  Brandon Brosher - 22/yrs old - Rd. 36/2013 -

  Dan Rizzie - 23/yrs. old - Rd. 13/2016 -

  Natanael Ramos - 24/yrs. old - IFA -

(I'm cutting loose ex prospect Ali Sanchez, who, IMO, is riddled with injuries and needs to go home and heal for a year... come back and then hook on with a team in the Mexican League. A good catcher can hang around in this game for 10+ years)

Low-A - Brooklyn -

  Jusn Uriarte - 19/yrs. old - IFA -

  Scott Manea - 21/yrs. old - Rd. 40/2014 Seattle -

  Carlos Sanchez - 21/yrs. old - IFA -

Rookie - Kingsport -

  Matthew Foley - 23/yrs. old - 40th Rd./2015 Miami -

  Kevin Hall -  23/yrs. old -

  Luis Lebron - 20 yrs. old - IFA -

  1. Hi Mack.

Carillo had a really bad year throwing outcrunners in Vegas, ceo I am not sure what happened there.

Ali Sanchez - do you recall his injury? Ci am hoping the new and improved Sanchez shows up next spring, ready to start hitting.

  2. Tom -

    Finally back home...

My apologies for the different fonts and colors on this series of posts. I just can't seem to get this old site to work properly and I don't have the technical knowledge to do it.

I never got to finish this post due to my family crisis... my summary would have included my prediction that Tomas Nido may be the future Mets catcher, as early as post All-Star 2018. We know he can hit and he plays the position better than d'Ar-not...

  3. It could be all smoke-and-mirrors, but the NYM Catcher Pipeline seems even more robust he than the SS conduit. (BTW, has anyone else connected the Keystone Pipeline with a queue of 2B'men?).

TdA/Plawecki; Nido/Mazeika; Dimino/Uriarte; and I have a new Cruzado on DSL teenager Wilfredo Astudillo (turns 18 in March) -- make an interesting crop. Dark horses IMO, who I haven't given up on are Carilo & Rzzie.

  4. Mack, I am still in prove-it-to-me mode with Nido. Nido hitting .232 in AA = what on major league level? .160?

Amazingly, thru Saturday's game, I looked at the catching trio's output (Travis, Plaw, and Rivera as a Met only): .240's, 25 homers, 86 RBIs...Travis had 52 RBIs in about 340 at bats.

Nido may be as good a D catcher as Rivera, but there is a huge offense gap between him and Travis/Plaw. Maybe Nido will burst out of the gates in AAA in 2018 and show 2017 was a slump year? I will say that, given his low average, Nido's 60 RBIs were solid.

  6. Mack, absolutely...Nido in Vegas, Mazeika starting in Binghamton, and us keeping our fingers crossed that no one gets hurt (if at all) until Nido and Patty M are ready for a promotion.
