Mack's Applies - 10-19-17 - Mets Cuts,Miami Cuts, Blake Holiday, Spectator Injury, Daniel Webb

Good morning.

I took a second look at what’s left in the minor league pipeline after the Mets released around 27 Latin players. I did find it a little strange that all the players spoke Spanish as a primary language. But ‘no problemo’.

Based on my original projections earlier this month –

1B – got an opening in Binghamton, so I’m going to move Dash Winningham up there from St. Lucie and I’m going to move Matt Winaker up from Brooklyn.

3B – Going to move Colby Woodmansee to fill the hole in Binghamton and replace him in St. Lucie with Reed Gamache.

SP – I need a fifth starter in Brooklyn and I’m bumping up prospect Jaison Viera from a projected Kingsport slot… got a similar problem in St. Lucie, so I will add Jose Carlos Medina from my projected Columbia rotation.

The new Miami Marlins plan on cutting payroll to $90mil.

If the current roster was left unchanged, next year’s payroll would approach $140 million, meaning ownership would need to eliminate about $50 million to get to the $90 million target figure they presented to owners. The owners could always choose to exceed or fall below $90 million.

Current salaried players in 2018 are -

                        OF Giancarlo Stanton      -           $25mil (a zillion thru 2028)
                        3B Martin Prado                -           $13.5mil ($15mil-2019)
                        RHSP Edinson Volguez     -           $13mil
                        2B Dee Gordon                   -           $10mil (2019-20: $13.8/yr)
                        LHSP Wei-Yin Chen            -           $10mil ($42mil-2019-20)
                        RHP Brad Zeigler               -           $9mil
                        RHP Junichi Tazawa          -           $7mil
                        OF Christian Yelich            -     $7mil ($34mil+ more thru 2012)

(God, I would kill for Gordon here…)

An opening day payroll of $90 million would have ranked 26th of 30 teams in the majors last season, ahead of only the Oakland A’s ($82 million), San Diego Padres ($71 million), Tampa Bay Rays ($70 million) and Milwaukee Brewers ($63 million).

A former Clemson baseball player is in critical condition following a four-wheeler accident Thursday afternoon, a Greenville Memorial Hospital spokesperson confirmed Saturday.

Blake Holliday, a pitcher on the Clemson baseball team in 2017, was airlifted to the hospital following an accident on Major and Rube Ashely roads in Belton, according to Dudley Brown, spokesperson for the hospital, and Anderson County dispatch.

Holiday left the Clemson baseball team after red-shirting for the 2017 season...  an update... he died yesterday morning.

Spectator injury lawsuits -

The risks of being hit by an errant ball or broken bat are low, according to lawsuits filed against other major-league teams over injuries. But the injuries they cause can be catastrophic, especially to children. A 7-year-old Cubs fan attending his first baseball game at Wrigley Field in 2008 was left with a fractured skull and swelling around his brain after being hit in the head by a line drive, the Tribune reported. There are no records indicating the family ever filed a lawsuit.

We’re getting to the point that, you not only are going to have to go through a metal detector to get to your seat, but you’re going to have to sign a release form before you sit down.

Sounds like a good time for Netflix to cut a deal with the league.

Former White Sox pitcher Daniel Webb passed away due to an ATV accident last night, according to a report from wpsdlocal6.com. Chris Davis, Sheriff of Humphreys County, confirmed the news via telephone.

The Blue Jays selected Webb in the 18th round of the 2009 June amateur draft, but the Kentucky native spent most of his career in the White Sox organization. During his time at the MLB level, he compiled 110 relief innings at the major league level, including 67 2/3 innings in 2014 with a 3.99 ERA. Webb showed promise with a fastball that averaged 96 MPH, but hadn’t pitched since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2016.

  1. Tough to see players due in accidents...stay off your ATVs, and motorcycles for that matter. One mistake is all it takes.

The Mets can trade any of my 31-50 ranked prospects for Stanton - or all of them, for that matter. Who are my 31-50 prospects? Revealed soon in my prospect series. See Gordon for Wi.met Flores? If Jeter really wants to save some $$...

Latin players who are not Bruno...it is now how you talk, it is how you play.

  2. @Thomas : REMEMBER DANNY FRISELLA !

  3. Dee Gordon is a given .. doubt Sandy has enough to get him from the fish .. Yellich might be more doable of a deal

  4. Ed, I would take Yelich, for sure.

Frisella - what a shame. A solid pitcher on crappy Mets teams.

  5. Mack...what is your overall rating on the Prospect Pipeline for Catchers?

  6. Speaking as someone who broke 7 ribs, a foot and a thumb in the same motorcycle accident, I would have to agree with you, Tom. Then again, my job has be sitting on my butt at work, not as a professional athlete...either that, or I'm a slow learner (with two motorcycles currently in my garage).

    1. Exactly Reese. When the optimum health of your body directly correlates to career longevity it is dumb as a player to do the high risk stuff

  7. Reese I pegged you as a Prius kind of guy lol .. but seriously as a left leaning libertarian I am torn about this issue .. but ultimately if a team is paying you to stay healthy it’s best to temper those kind of higher risk extracurricular activities

  8. we should target any of the OFers... Gordon reminds me of the castillo trade and he plays 2b, position we could fill internally...

This is tough statement but I would trade Rosario for Stanton if that was at all possible...

I am a little down on Rosario as i expected a Lindor type player from someone regarded as a top 5 talent in all of baseball...
    hoping I am wrong...

Smith is another one i would package for Yelich or Ozuna...
To me Alonzo is my hope for 1B...

  9. Gamache is gonzo, I think. Would you bump Terrazaz to St.Lu?

  10. Nickel -

The catcher position is 'sort of' deep -

    Nido has the baton.

I happen to like Patrick Mazeika a lot. He's right behind Nido if Tomas stumles again this season.

Next comes Anthony Dimino who has showed promise with a bat in his hands.

And last... and maybe the best... is Juan Uriarte.

There seems to be enough here to strengthen the position, if needed, for the next 5 years.

  11. Hobie -

    strange cut -

I would NOT rush either Terrazas or Vientos.

My guess is Stajduhar and let Tiberi play in Columbia post TJS surgery

  12. Lets not forget Brian Cole though it wasn't an ATV but rolled his car and wasn't wearing a seat belt. Now I grew up before they invented dirt and we didn't wear seat belts back then until our kids pestered us to death and that was in the 80's but young people will always do stupid things and especially males so it's just a question of are your feeling lucky today. Back to how about Cespedes for Stanton with surely some additional players like Flores and they can throw in Gordon....they why not. Oh well it's off season and it's something to talk about.

    1. Actually I think They found that Cole’s seatbelt was defective

    2. Ed, if Cole were a Yankee, the seatbelt would have worked

    3. And Gil Hodges would have been recusitated on the golf course

  13. Ed -

Did an interview with David Wright Re: Cole when they dedicated the intra-squad game prior to Game one of the 20007 spring training season. Still have the tape around here of that interview.

  14. Such a tragedy .. I always heard he was a good kid & upstanding citizen .. so sad we could not see him grow into a good player & great human being

  15. Ed and Mack, to me the Mets have simply had far more of their share of overly serious injuries, and bizarre happenings, over the years - such as Sean Ratcliff being hit in the eye with a liner in the batting circle, ending his career Tony Conigliaro style. Cole, too. Ike Davis career going south after his bizarre mini-collision with Wright. Etc.

What a trio Wright, Reyes, and Cole would have been together.
