Morning folks.
Well, I’ve reached the
point that I have now snagged 10 mock drafts, so we ought to be able to get a
better picture at what might be going out there.
“Hot” trends are
already beginning to develop. Some players were never mentioned on early mocks,
but have climbed up the list.
Examples would be:
Auburn RHP Casey Mise, who has
been picked as one of the top 10 picks in the last four mock drafts.
USF LHP Shane McClanahan, wo
has been ranked in the top 10 four of the last five mock drafts taken.
Montverde Academy (FL) SS Nander De
Salas, who has been ranked in the top 10 three of the last four mocks.
But none bigger than Stetson RHP Logan
Gilbert. He wasn’t even mentioned in the first six mocks here, but, the
last mock, Baseball Draft Report (10-7), had him as the number one overall pick
in the draft.
Guys that have fell out of the top 10
more recently include Florida RHP Jackson Kowar,
Stanford LHP Kris Bubic, and Clemson 1B/OF Seth Beer.

I like Brennan Breaux for my first round pick...not sure why, bro'.
ReplyDeleteKidding aside, I like the OF Kelenic in the first round and Breaux in the 2nd. I do not want Another Anthony Kay situation, where we draft a first round pitcher in 2018 and he throws his first minor league inning in 2020. We're getting too old for guys in incubators.
Mack do you think the Mets should first & foremost draftva OF bar or pitching ?
ReplyDeleteEd -
ReplyDeleteIt really doesn't matter who you draft each year. They won't be ready for 4-5 years at any position.
Oh, Conforto was the exception here, but he was promoted due to an emergency slot opening and he did stumble when he first came up.
Most teams, including the Mets, operate on the 'best player available' basis. This was how the Mets drafted Conforto, No one in the Mets draft room expected him to still be on the board when it came time for them to pick. He was the number one bat on their list.
I do; however, think teams move away from the 'best player' plan sometimes. It still is my guess that the reason the Mets kept drafting all those SSs while at the same time signing them out of the DR, was the fact that they wanted to find a suitable replacement at short that was lacking since Jose left the team.
This year?
I do not know Ed.
A lot will determine what the first 5 picks are.
If a guy like Singer falls to 6 due to other teams under-slotting their picks, you bet the Mets would scoop him up.
As for Seth Beer (caution: fan alert), he may be the one guy you could draft in 2018 and would be ready in 2020. He also is capable of hitting 20-30 home runs the first year in Flushing.
(he also could lead the league in strikeouts and RF errors)
Would you say that players like Ventura/Conforto & even Judge are exceptions to be rule
ReplyDeleteEd -
ReplyDeleteThere are always exceptions. None more than Piazza.
Look at that kid playing 2B for the Dodgers. He was a 5-6 round pick with a meh minor league record and never hit one minor league home run. Then some batting coach adds a Justin Turner raised leg to his swing and he hits a gazillion bombs this season.
You do the best you can here and pray.
A couple of things...
1. Let's remember the Mets are picking #6... meaning, it will be like having two first round picks. Check out eh top 45 names. Your other Mers pick is probably in there somewhere.
2. The kid playing second for LA proves how important it is for them to be taught new things in the pipeline. I've humg out with Mets minor league teams on the field at 2pm when there is a 7pm game. Most of what the coaches brought to the table was walk through fungos and routine bullpen sessions. THIS is the problem the Mets have... poor coaching throughout their system.
How many stud catchers have come out? I'd take Banfield.

ReplyDeleteGood choice. He is that.
TexasGusCC, I read this on Banfield - you may be onto something:
