Now that the World Series has ended (Hooray, Astros!), the
Hot Stove Season has officially begun.
Let’s bear in mind some key dates (including one today) to watch as the Mets continue to fill
out their roster for the upcoming season:
- 11/2 – Players may file for free agency and the 5 day window opens for teams to negotiate exclusively with their potentially departing personnel
- 11/4 – Deadline for option decisions to be made (unless contract specifies otherwise)
- 11/6 – Date by which a $17.4 million QO must be made to any departing free agent (think Neil Walker – no, forget)
- 11/7 – Free agents who have not re-signed with their current team may now begin negotiating with all others
- 11/13 – Players must decide whether or not to accept a QO if a team indeed offered that to them
- 11/13-11/16 – GM/Industry meetings take place in Florida
- 11/20 – Deadline for ballclubs to protect players from the Rule V draft on the 40-man roster
- 12/10-12/14 – Winter Meetings in Orlando, Florida
- 12/14 – Rule V Draft
- 1/13 – Deadline to submit arbitration figures for both teams and players to be decided by an independent third party
Of course, the club also needs to make some coaching
decisions for the bench, 1st base and elsewhere.
Grab a mug of a your favorite beverage and let the Hot Stove
begin…
I love "clear and concise."
ReplyDeleteWill someone please tell me why, Frank Viola was never considered for the pitching coach position ?
ReplyDeleteSo what are the pro’s of picking up Cabrera’s option other than a “veteran presence” for the team ?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteAs good of a coach as Viola is.....there were a number of equally good pitching coaches on the free agent market with MLB experience.
Viola is unfortunately a victim of an oversaturated market. He'll get his chance with another team in the next year or 2.
@Ed Marcus
ReplyDeletePros:
1) Even when playing hurt for most of the past 2 years, the guy has played in 141 and 135 games while hitting for a .280 AVG both seasons. Right now he's the teams 3rd best hitter behind Yo! and Conforto.
2) He provides the club with the ability to attack both the 2B AND the 3B market to find the best fit as Cabrera can play whichever position they don't fill.
3) He's a really consistent year long hitter.....never falling into a deep slump at the plate. His avg by month was
.244 April
.300 May
.262 June
.253 July
.255 August
.371 September
4) At a fairly low $8.5M salary, he very easily can post #'s that provide WAR value above that.
Cons
He caused a pretty bad stink in the clubhouse at times last season with his lack of desire to play anything outside of SS. With Rosario on the roster, this problem can still exist.
If Mets improve at both 2B AND 3B....Cabrera becomes an expensive unmotivated bench piece (Alejandro de Aza 2.0)
His leg injury issues continue to bug him and 2018 becomes the season where he can't push through it.
That's an excellent summary Chris S. With an option deadline of 11/4, my guess is the pro's win out over the con's. At any rate we'll see soon.
ReplyDeleteWell MLBTR is predicting that the only top tier free agent the nets will sign is Frazier ... SMH
ReplyDeleteJose Reyes filed for free agency
ReplyDeleteI will always have a special place in my heart for Jose but he really has no place on this team .. except for super sub
DeleteNow that the senile manager is no more, perhaps he would be considered in that role.
ReplyDeleteNo post is complete without an attack on Terry, even if the topic has nothing to do with him, right?
DeleteWhat role, senile?
ReplyDeleteRuben Amaro Jr is now our first base coach!
ReplyDeleteCabby had exactlt ONE brief instance of expressing his unhappiness about being moved. Once he calmed down, he was very vocal about welcoming his new role and his desire to remain with the team.
ReplyDeleteIt actually will cost SIX mil to pick up his option, since there's a 2 mil buyout clause.
$6.5 million. His option year is $8.5 million with a $2 million buyout.
ReplyDeleteActually, the topic of Jose Reyes was raised and it was suggested he would do well as a supersub but not as a starter, something the Skipper never understood. Well, one of many somethings...
Regardless of what you thought of TC his playing of the 3 vets at season's end over the kids was inexcusable and of course we will find out in years to come what the loss of draft position cost us so did he do it to punish us knowing he's out the door at season's end?
