Hot Stove - 12-21-17
San Francisco traded IF Christian Arroyo, OF Denard Span, P Stephen Woods, and P Matt Krook to Tampa Bay for 3B Evan Longoria.
a Mets equivalent trade here would be something like Amed Rosario, Juan Lagares, Thomas Szapucki, and Cannon Chadwick
would you do it?
Colorado is taking with ex-Met RP Addison Reed.
Cleveland is inking a 2-year, $16mil deal with 1B Yonder Alonso.
Milwaukee has inked a 2-year deal with RHP Jhoulys Chacin.
And lastly...
The New York Mets has extended their contract with P Jake de... err... no... P Noah Synder.... err... oh, I got it... Sandy Alderson.
I'll have more on this later...
The Chacin deal is rumored to be two years for a total of $8 million. Sandy asleep at the wheel yet again...I wish my employer would reward me for doing nothing.
ReplyDeleteLongoria would be an upgrade over Cabrera, but that trade package would be hard to swallow. Especially since he also comes with a bunch of money owed through 2022 and he is in slow decline skills wise. Including David Wright, that would be a ton of cash and assets tied up in one spot when there are gaping holes elsewhere on the roster (2B, foe example).
ReplyDeleteNow if you want to deal for Brian Dozier, I would be open for discussion.
@Reese, i'm pretty sure you mean $8 million per year
ReplyDeleteMack,
ReplyDeleteI would have traded for Longoria in a heartbeat. But I don't think the package you outlined is necessarily the one I would offer.
Except for matching the players up, position for position, I think Smith is more of an equal than Rosario. Smith had better minor league numbers than Arroyo, and they both had mediocre cups of coffee this past season. Moreover, the 1B on the Rays depth chart isn't a 1B at all, looked pretty bad in the field playing part time at first, and batted .201. Smith would be an upgrade.
Similarly, I don't see the need to trade a CF because the Giants did. TB doesn't need Span. They took him to offset some of Longoria's salary. I would include AJ Ramos for the same reason, although they could use Ramos in the pen, while Span is #3 on their depth chart at CF.
And Mack, you equate Thomas Szapucki, Mets #4 prospect (2.27 ERA, 1.020 WHIP, 3.2 BB/9, 12.5 K/9) and Cannon Chadwick (1.33, 1.370, 4.7, 13.3) with the junk the Giants sent to Tampa? Stephen Woods (3.04, 1.455, 5.3, 9.3) and Matt Krook (5.25, 1.644, 6.5, 10.4) are both considered relievers, and neither in the Rays Top 30 Prospects. Virtually any of the relievers we received last summer is better that they are. So I would offer Stephen Nagosek and Gerson Bautista, our #23 & #30 prospects.
To sweeten the pot, I would throw in Mets #15 prospect, 3B Jhoan Urena.
So that's my offer, which I think is better than they actually got for Longoria:
Dom Smith, AJ Ramos, Stephen Nagosek, Gerson Bautista & Jhoan Urena.
Whaddaya think?
Oh, and BTW, since Ramos will cost the Rays about $4 million less than Span, I would expect them to send that much more to us to offset Longoria's salary. Giants got $14.5 M, we would get $18.5 M.

ReplyDeleteBetter job than me on this.
No thanks on Longoria, we do not need another mid 30s high priced guy on the way down no less give up young talent for him.
ReplyDeleteWell, I guess Alderson got a $20 million dollar raise, as Joel Sherman says that is the 2018 reduction from last year's opening payroll.
Uh oh.
ReplyDeleteWatch out.
Wilpon is "irate" that the Yankees obtained Stanton.
Priceless.
Yes! great omar minaya..said no one not named minaya or wilpon ever.
ReplyDeletei can deal with cheap owners. I can deal with absentee owners, but stupid owners is beyond me.
smart and cheap works. Dumb and rich works. Absent is actually the best. But dumb and cheap is the worst combo out there, besides racist.
The addition of Omar Minaya could be a good move if he brings clarity to the draft room and the Int'l scouting. Minaya was always a genius at this.
ReplyDeleteHe always treated me with respect when I was in his clubhouse.
I wish him well.
Anybody see they rehired Omar to help with scouting? I'm a fan
ReplyDeleteMack
ReplyDeletemy problem with minaya is just that if you hire the same people over again you dont really ever move forward. He was a very good scout but my experience with bringing in people who have a direct line to ownership/boards anywhere is that it undermines the people meant to be in charge and leads to problems at the management level which filters down and causes issues.
