Hot Stove - 1-5-17

The Mets and Pirates are discussing a possible trade for OF Andrew McCutchen.

LHP Scott Alexander was traded by Kansas City to the Dodgers.
IF Jake Peters was traded by the White Sox to the Dodgers.
Kansas City received P Trevor Oaks and IF Erick Mejia in this 3-team deal, and RP Joakim Soria went to the White Sox from the Royals and RP Luis Aviman went from the Dodgers to the White Sox.

(if I got anything wrong about this trade, I really don't care...)

OF Eric Young Jr. came up with a minor league deal from the LA Angels.

  1. McCutcheon? Is there enough room with this team for TWO Macks?

  2. Ah, so the baseball world spins with activity except in Flushing.

They are allegedly discussing a trade of negligible assets to get a one-year rental...understandable in the Mets world, ponderous in others. There are free agents you can sign that won't cost you scant resources of players yet fill that void.

  3. So the choices are:
Find out if Lagares is your CF going forward.
Find out if McCutchen has anything left for 2018.

Personally, I rather see Lagares because even if McCutchen is good, he is not enough and these Mets would let him walk away anyway. However, if Lagares is good, he has 2/3 years left of control.

  4. NO, NO, NO!

I like McCutchen, but he is a big name that has likely passed his prime. So, his contract will not match his production and we will need to surrender valuable assets to get him (plus he will be a free agent after this year).

Where does he play if Cespedes, Lagares/Nimmo and Conforto are all healthy?

IF you are spending assets (cash and/or prospects), FIND SOMEONE WHO IS ON THE UPSWING AND AT A POSITION OF NEED!

(sorry, I have had a lot of caffeine today in frigid FLA)

  5. In Florida you need coffee. In Ct, you need Johnny Walker Double Black. It was 6 degrees and windy last night while clearing my driveway.

  6. Ok, so the official tally is that the Mets have now talked to every MLB team about every player, every top 20 prospect, and they have talked to representatives for every free agent. Now that this has been accomplished, I can sleep well tonight.

  7. Yeah, I grew up in the Catskills so I vaguely remember what actual winter is like. Now, if it dips below 50 we all freak out!
