Tom Brennan - WHEELER TO VEGAS
Mets announced this move today. I am happy to see that.
Let Zach work his stuff out there. I like Wheeler but this team has no room for guys to be working out their problems in real games. That is how you miss the playoffs. You need a well performing 25.
Robles too - this team is no longer wedded to entitlement or seniority - winning is being prioritized.
Good.
100% agreed. Callaway is all business.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tom... you beat me!
ReplyDeleteIdle hands, Mack! Waiting for my wife, again!
ReplyDeleteIf I had said the team is no longer wedded to entitlement or seniority I would have been accused of bashing poor, put-upon Terry Collins :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, I hope I don't pull a muscle patting myself on the back for correctly predicting that Wheeler would be shipped out in the article that ran earlier this morning before the move was made.
ReplyDeleteI take a bit of a swipe at TC in an article this week. Swipes where swipes are due.
ReplyDeleteFine, but where's the credit when it's due. Did Terry "ruin" Wilmer, or is Wilmer earning more time because of the way Terry brought him along? Reese likes to talk about how Terry "ruins" kids, but I'm still waiting to get the list of the "ruined".
ReplyDeleteOn another note, PJ Conlon was BRILLIANT today. He started, and pitched 4 scoreless, with 1 H and 0 W. He may become our 2nd LHRP after all.
Without question, Teery Collins stood in the way & held Flores back.
DeleteBill, Terry has brought him along? You’re joking, right? Collins admitted that he didn’t believe in the young player. I’ve often asked people to name a single player that Collins directly nourtured through his approach, but no one ever has.
DeleteConlon was awesome indeed. When was the last time Wheeler did that? He deserved the demotion, as did the completely ineffective Robles, and a case can surely be made for a Conlon promotion. Conlon pitches like a QUALITY major leaguer.
ReplyDeleteAndrew Church hits the radar screen with 3 outstanding innings today. Somewhere Ernest Dove is smiling.
ReplyDeleteAnd Kyle Regnault is very ineffective in the 998th inning loss.
ReplyDeleteNow Bill wants to give credit to Terry Collins for developing Wilmer Flores? Wow, just wow! He gave ABs to the likes of Ruben Tejada, Eric Campbell, Jose Reyes and James Loney ahead of Flores, but that was to help make Flores into who he is today? Just wow...
ReplyDeleteMy bad. 😯
ReplyDeleteObviously it was Callaway who developed him.
This is not an either/or choice.
DeleteFlores natural talent and hard work resulted in his development to this point.
His development, most likely would be even further along, if more faith was placed in him to be an every day starter by Collins.
One thing for sure the Mets should have pitching depth is Wheeler gets his mechanics sorted out
ReplyDeleteI don't have the mind-reading ability some others seem to have. We know Wilmer is a better hitter than he was 3 years ago. Maybe a psychic can tell us if he would be better if he played more, or if exposing him earlier would've destroyed him.
ReplyDeleteI was teasing Reese about giving Terry all the credit, but jumping to EITHER of the conclusions above is just plain wrong. What we KNOW is that he progressed under Terry. We can GUESS forever if the result would be better or worse with different mgr decisions.
Jump to conclusions, but watch out for the cliff.
Justin Turner? :)
ReplyDeleteI'm still waiting for Reese's list of players that he "ruined".
ReplyDeleteOn what grounds are you coming to the conclusion that Flires is a better hitter than he was 3 years ago?
ReplyDeleteFlores entered the major leagues with expectations on par with his current production, if not greater.
As far as players that Collins ruined, I would begin my research with bullpen pitchers and young starting prospects such as Montero.
Wilmer used to be useless vs RHP, and good vs LHPs. Last year he was at least average vs righties and crushed the lefties.
ReplyDeleteAt any rate, despite my facetious comment to Reese, my feeling is that the effect of a mgr on a particular player is like the half glass of water--- all in the eye of the beholder. You can read into it whatever you want, but "knowing" is ludicrous.
Wilmer is just one example. Did he improve BECAUSE of Terry's approach, DESPITE it, or did the approach have no effect at all? How can we "know"?
Wilmer was NEVER useless against right handed pitchers when given regular playing time.
