Tom Brennan - WE'RE 8-1, BABY!

Tom Brennan - WE'RE 8-1, BABY!

"It sure gets boring winning every night, so boring, that much I can tell you." No, Donald Trump didn't say that; neither did I.

I, in point of fact and stated for the record, love NY Mets winning streaks.

Remember in 1969, after losing several straight games to fall to 18-23, the soon-to-be World Champ Mets reeled off 11 straight  exhilarating wins?   I sure do.

Well, after 6 wins in a row to move to 8-1, and with Jake the Great on the bump tonight, we are again in times of exhilaration.

Thor was good, but wasn't as good as Maz Scherzer or Corey Kluber last night - but we won. All that counts.  Robles, Blevins, Ramos, and Familia put up 3 very important scoreless relief innings - and we won.  All that counts.

While they missed a chance to blow last night's game wide open when they increased the lead to 4-2, but both Cespedes and Bruca fanned with the bags full, and while Jeurys Familia needed to get out of a nerves-inducing 9th inning jam with the tying runs in scoring position by fanning the last 2 dudes, a W is a W.

Winning keeps me grinning.

Didn't Mickey Callaway's Indians, with Jay is More Than OK Bruce, win 22 in a row last year?  Let's do that again with the team these two are currently on, THE NEW YORK METS.

After a 2-3 season start in 1986, the 108 win World Champ Mets team reeled off 18 of 19 to move out to 20-4.  20-4 in 2018 too sounds good to me.

I'm thinking big, hope you are too.  Lots of wins, World Series...end that 32 year drought.  KEEP WINNING!

Until next time, people!

  1. Tom -

    Morning.

Don't remember 1969. Just got back from Saigon and the next year was a 'purple haze' (he he...)

This is a great start, but the team will slump and the test is how they handle that.

But... this seems like a team that you never feel lost when they are losing.

  2. Agreed, Mack.

I just hope the pen holds up rest-wise until Swarzak comes back. Last year the pen was a fright; so far, it has been a delight.

I remember in 1969 (assuming my mind has not scrambled facts) when they were at .500 at 18-18, I was so thrilled...the Mets? At .500? After 36 games.

Then they lost 5 straight, and it felt like, "same old Mets, fooled me again."

Then they ran off the 11 straight (the Mets? Eleven straight?), and it was clear this wasn't Casey's bumbling Mets any longer. They suddenly felt legitimate at 29-23.

  3. So the question is whether it's health or management that is more attributable to the change in attiude and on-the-field success?

  4. A few things of note in the first nine games:
    - We have to start with AGone showing flashes of being a pro’s pro on defense and acceptable on offense. I’m happy to be stunned.
    - Callaway is winning, so that may be the reason, but he said many people would close and have to figure out how to get more time for Nimmo, Lagares and Flores, but admittedly, I don’t have an idea. But things are working now, and while we can’t rock the boat, we can’t let fatigue step in and cause an injury.
    - Sewald has pitched in just one game? What happened there?
    - The opponents success rate on stealing bases is very concerning. That must be addressed.
    - The team skipped batting practice in Miami to work on defense and relays. Heard this listening to Josh and Howie and they said it’s very rare to see a team not take batting practice and work on fundies.

  5. I think you may see the Mets clean out the pen tonight, regardless of the score in the first 5 innings.

  6. TexasGus, A Gon's grand slam the other day was so huge - it turned that game around. He's my 1B against righties until he proves he can't do it effectively anymore. He's earned it.
