PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (May 8, 2018) – The Florida Fire Frogs won a sloppy game 8-4 over the St. Lucie Mets on Tuesday at First Data Field.
The Mets committed a season-high four errors that led to five unearned runs. Four Mets pitchers combined to walk a season-high eight batters.
St. Lucie was up 4-3 to start the fourth inning when the game started to slip away. The Fire Frogs started the inning with back-to-back tappers to the mound from Marcus Mooney and Cristian Pache, but Mets pitcher Adam Atkins threw away the first comebacker and first baseman Dash Winningham couldn’t catch the second one.
After the two errors, Brett Cumberland blooped a two-run single to score both Mooney and Pache to give the Fire Frogs a 5-4 lead.
Atkins walked two more batters and allowed a two-run single to Ray-Patrick Didder that put Florida up 7-4.
Three Fire Frogs relievers – Connor Johnstone, Mauricio Cabrera and Chad Sobotka – kept the Mets off the scoreboard the final five innings.
Johnstone threw two innings to get the win. Sobotka retired all six batters he faced, four on strikeouts, to finish out the contest.
For the Mets, Anthony Dimino became the first player to record a four-hit game. He went 4 for 4 with three singles, a double, a run and a stolen base.
Desmond Lindsay became the first Met to draw three walks in a game.
For all the trouble on the mound, the four Mets pitchers - Michael Gibbons, Atkins, Thomas McIlraith and Stephen Nogosek - combined to strikeout a season-best 15 batters.
Gene Cone extended his hitting streak to eight games with a RBI double in the second inning.
The Mets trailed 3-0 early but rallied to take a brief lead on Dash Winningham’s two-out, two-run single in the second inning.
The Mets (13-17) and Fire Frogs (12-20) conclude their series with an Education Day game on Wednesday morning at 10:30.
