Mack - Some 'Minor' Observations - Starters

Good morning.

Las Vegas –

Chris Flexen

   Thursday:         6-IP, 7-H, 3-ER, 5-K, 0-BB, LOSS (2-2), 95-P, 61-ST

This would be considered a + outing in the PCL. Also, his seasonal ERA (3.82) is still below the magical four level that breaks or breaks a PCL starter.

Cory Oswalt

      Monday:       6-IP, 8-H, 3 ER, 7-K, 0- BB, WIN (2-1)), 90-P, 65-ST
This was a good outing for Oswalt’s first return as a Vegas starter. Also, the most innings he has thrown in one game this season. Could have been less runs scored but this is the PCL. I especially like the seven strikeouts. I’ll take this one.

Saturday:      2.2-IP, 5-H, 7-ER, 1-K, 3-BB, LOSS (2-2), 59-P, 32-ST

Wow, Oswalt did his Vargas/Wheeler imitation that included giving up seven runs in less than three innings pitched. He was pulled after 59 pitches. This is no way to convince the powers to be that he should be first up to Queens if needed.

P.J. Conlon

     Tuesday:               5-IP, 6-H, 4-ER, 3-K, 1-BB, 6.75, 75-P, 44-ST

Conlon went in the wrong direction here. God, I hate pitching in this town. I have no idea how you would evaluate a pitcher in this climate, but I do know that throwing 31 balls out of 75 pitches thrown is going to get you nowhere.

And… that being said… the Sacramento pitching staff only gave up one run in the same atmosphere.

Sunday:                   Conlon was scheduled to pitch this past Sunday again for Vegas, but he got the call to meet the Mets in Cincinnati for (hopefully) a spot start in place of Jacob deGrom.

Binghamton -

            Nabil Crismatt

                        Tuesday:                   5.1-IP, 6-H, 4-ER, 5-K, 1-BB, 2.28

Easily Nabil’s worst outing of the young season, but he still owns a sub-2.50 ERA. Put up four scoreless innings to start and this looked like it was going to be another one of his gems, but he was hit up for two runs each in the fifth and sixth.

St. Lucie:

Justin Dunn                      Sunday’s scheduled outing was rained out.

Harol Gonzalez

     Thursday:        6-IP, 4-H, 1-ER, 3-K, 2-BB, LOSS (0-3), 93-P, 53-ST

A good outing for Gonzalez, but his pitch count still needed to be pulled back so he can give us more innings. Seasonal 3.96-ERA would be great in the PCL, but this is Florida. Almost there.

Columbia:

Anthony Kay

                        Saturday:         6.1-IP, 5-H, 4-ER, 6-K, 2-BB, 3.42, 93-P, 61-ST

Kay was doing great until the beginning of the seventh inning. He wasn’t left in too long. He just ran out of gas.

David Peterson

            Tuesday:           5-IP, 4-H, 0-ER, 6-K, 4-BB, 3.24, 89-P, 58-ST

A much better outing by Peterson this time around. Did give up two runs but both were unearned. There still is a control issue here (4-walks), but I give Peterson an E for effort here.

Current rankings…

            Two good outings…          Gonzalez, Peterson

Work Needed…                  The rest of them

  2. Tom -

As for SPs, there is not much going on positive at all levels.

  3. I know it seems worse then it is, but the cupboard seems to be a little light on impact talent right now.

    Nice write up, Mack.
