Mack - Some 'Minor' Observations: The Starters

Good morning.

Las Vegas –

Corey Oswalt -

           Wednesday:                        6-IP, 3-H, 1-ER, 6-K, 0-BB, WIN (3-3), 6.18
Now, this is the kind of Oswalt outing we all got used to last year in upstate New York. It was thrown in Sacramento, where the air is pretty normal, but a great win is a great win and we will take it.

P.J. Conlon

Tuesday:                   3-IP, 6-H, 5-ER, 2-K, 2-BB, 6.58

Conlon has now given up six runs or more in every game since the first he pitched this year on April 8th.

This isn’t a pitcher suffering from jet lag caused by a trip to and from the parent club. No, this is a pitcher not having a prospect year, so we will drop him from this weekly report.

Binghamton -

            Nabil Crismatt

                        Wednesday:      5-IP, 5-H, 3-ER, 7-K, 4-BB, LOSS (5-2), 3.06

Crismatt’s first loss since April 14th, it all blew up for him in the fourth inning. Too many pitches out of the zone.

One concern note watching: 11 walks in the last 16 innings pitched.

              Christian James:         ***Helium Alert***

                       Sunday:              4-IP, 3-H, 1-ER, 4-K, 1-BB, LOSS (0-1), 2.25

The 20/yr. old James started 11 games for Kingsport                                                        last season (4.18) so it came as quite the surprise                                                            when he was promoted this week to... no, not                                                                  Columbia... and no, not St. Lucie. He gets  a call to                                                        Binghamton for a sweet first start. Is this the                                                                  beginning of a youth movement from this                                                                        organization. Yeah. Go dream.

St. Lucie:

            Justin Dunn

                        Tuesday:                   4.1-IP, 6-H, 5-ER, 3-K, 3-BB, 3.21

Dunn hadn’t given up more than two earned runs in any of his previous six outings. I’m going to write this one of to all the rain outs there this past week that pushed back his start for five days.

Harol Gonzalez

            Saturday:                 4-IP, 7-H, 3-ER, 5-K, 1-BB, 3.52

The game was suspended after four innings and, with all the rains that are falling in Florida, it may never get finished. SAtill, if that happens, the stats will hold and will add another minor outing for Harol.

***Helium Alert***
Yeizo Campos -                   4.1-IP, 2-H, 0-ER, 5-K, 2-BB, 0.00

Campos was called up recently to help stabilize the Columbia pitching staff. The 22/yr old is a starter, but is starting off as a long man when one of Columbia’s rotation pitchers get in trouble early, So far, in four outings, he has not given up an earned run in 10.1-IP. He also has struck out 12. Keep an eye on this guy.

Columbia:

Anthony Kay

            Saturday:                 7-IP, 5-H, 1-ER, 8-K, 1-BB, WIN (2-2)

Two professional career highs here… most innings pitched per game and most strikeouts per game. These are the kind of starts we dreamed of when Kay was drafted. His last two games: 12-IP, 1-ER, 13-K. Let’s hope this is a sign of things to come.

            David Peterson

                        Sunday:         6.2-IP, 7-H, 2-ER, 7-K, 0-BB, LOSS (1-3), 2.03

His two previous outings were better, but this is still three outstanding outings in a row, especially for a system that is as depleted as this one is.
Current rankings…

            Outstanding outings…     Oswalt, Kay, Peterson

            Work Needed…                  Dunn

  1. Dunn is pitching better this year, but in his second go-round in St Lucie, allowing too many base runners. Curious as to why.

He has allowed 163 hits and 70 walks in 159 career IP. "Only" (the days it is only) 145 Ks in those 159 IP.

Not the stats you'd expect from a first rounder.

PJ Conlon is reminding me results-wise of former Mets prospect Mark Cahoon, a softy tosser who dominated rookie and A ball, but couldn't master AA and AAA. I hope PJ figures it out.

  2. I think PJ needs to go back to the bullpen and work on becoming a "solid" LOOGY type.

Maybe Justin Dunn is also a future reliever? It would be a pretty big miss (in a long line of them for this Front Office) considering
where he was drafted, but it is what it is, right? Maybe shorter outings will allow him to ramp up his velocity a bit and focus on only one or two pitches (a la Mariano Rivera).

The farm system is pretty barren in the upper levels.

  3. I would, based on results so far, not rule out Peterson being on the 25 man roster by next June, if not earlier. Yes, he is only in Columbia, but if he does not have flaws, and his recent pitching has been pretty flawless, let's move him up fast over the next 3 months and into the Mets' 2019 rotation.

He is probably better than Vargas right now.

Maybe Oswalt in 2019 too - but Flexen is now off my list until he earns his way back on. He was simply awful yesterday.

  4. Can’t wait to see who we pick at #6 in June. Also, i’m going to bet “under six months” for how long it will be before they announce the Tommy John surgery.

  5. Adam Smith, ever the optimist!

Just kidding, there seems to be an active multi-generational jinx in this organization.
