Tom Brennan - SHOULD JOSE REYES BE LET GO?

Tom Brennan - SHOULD JOSE REYES BE LET GO?

The Mets have followed their scintillating 13-3 start by going a stultifying 5-14 since.

Stop right there, you are reading too fast:

They have gone FIVE AND FOURTEEN SINCE!

With a nice division lead when they were 13-3, first Atlanta passed them by; then Philly passed them by; then the Nats passed them by.

The Mets now sit in 4th place, just 5.5 games ahead of the heavily gutted Marlins.  If the Marlins had not been heavily gutted, the Mets would be in last place.

Jose Reyes is not a main part of the problem - because he does not play enough - but he is clearly part of the problem.

After a very weak spring in which he went 8 for 46 (.174), he has gone a weaker 5 for 41 with one RBI during the season.

13 for 87 overall is .149.  Winning teams don't carry .149ers.

A main (but not sole) reason for the Mets' collapse has been a lack of offense.  So his lack of offense has clearly hurt.

So, my question is, should Jose Reyes be let go before the Phillies series starts?   Designated for assignment, and see if anyone is interested, and send him down to AAA?

What do you decide?

Patience is not a viable strategy.

  1. My thoughts on Jose were written in an early post.

At this point in his career, he has only two purposes. One, to offer Amed Rosario support and direction. And two, to serve as a utility infielder that includes being an emergency third baseman.

THAT is why he is on the team now. To play third until our regular guy comes back healed.

Past that, the Mets will have to decide who will be the emergency third baseman is... Cabrera, Guillorme, or Reyes.

  2. Mack, I just wonder how long Rosario needs "support and direction." He's been in 79 major league games already. And given Amed's lack of plate discipline and base stealing acumen, you wonder if that support and direction from Jose is insubstantial.

And I wonder if he could sufficiently get that from some of the club's other Hispanic ballplayers.

Of course, it is hard for me to assess as an outsider how important Reyes is to Rosario - maybe if it is even just moral support, it is worth it for a while longer for Reyes to be there for Rosario. But maybe not.

Is anyone holding the hands of Gleyber Torres or Miguel Andujar?

I'd prefer the Mets go in another direction than Jose right now.

The Mets are only 5 runs ahead of the 25th scoring team right now, and at .230, only 6 points in average ahead of the worst-in-baseball Marlins. They need to fix their typically second division offense where they can.

Maybe they hold onto Jose until TJ Rivera returns - almost 9 months since his surgery, can't be much longer.

  3. Phil Evans is on the 40 man roster and also plays OF

  4. Phil has 5 homers but is hitting just .240, not helping his cause right now.

  5. Reyes isn’t part of the problem. For his position, he will do. It’s the stiffs in the lineup hurting the cause.
