Carlos
Cortes, OF, Univ. of South Carolina
Ht/Wt: 5’7”/197 B/T: L/R Age (as of
2018 MLB Draft): 20y, 11m
Cortes utilizes excellent trunk and core strength to produce
plus impressive power to the pull side given his size and demonstrates an
ability to work for pitches he can drive. There are some plate coverage
concerns, which were evident on the Cape last summer, but the raw materials are
here for a big league contributor with the stick. Though his .244 batting
average would indicate a down year, Cortes demonstrated on base skills by
drawing more walks (39) than strikeouts (29) and hit 15 homeruns.
I predict Tom will not be happy with this "little dude" (kidding)
ReplyDeleteActually, this seems like one of the "under slot" type picks to save some cash for later??
Cortes is no Nick Madrigal
ReplyDeleteI am SC local and follow Clemson and Gamecocks...
this is no one to write home about
this better be a under slot sign to sign others later
ReplyDeleteSo with the 77th overall pick, we picked the small guy ranked 177th? I won't second-guess the Mets, their track record at being contrarians is so good.
ReplyDeleteLast year, we did crappy trying to sign elite young guys in later rounds with underslot $$ savings.
ReplyDeleteSo far, thru 4 rounds, I am once again unimpressed.
We graded out one of the worst last year after the draft was complete - after 4 rounds, do you think anyone is going to grade the Mets as having a better-than-expected-for-their-slot draft? My guess is NO.
Cortes is ambidextrous - is he amphibious, too?
