Good
morning.
Well,
we have my last 2018 composite mock here today, using the last 10 mock drafts I have
latched onto on the net.
They
include entries from Jim Callis, Fangraphs, Fansided, The Sporting News, and
Perfect Game.
Lastly,
all mocks listed here only posted their predictions for either the first round
or through the first 50 picks. Thus, this composite result will not go much
deeper than that.
(before we get going, I want to once point out that this is not how I think things will go down.
The same six players should remain in the top six; however P Matt Liberatore could be a wild card to pass Brady Singer. Singer has just not finished as strong as scouts had him earler in the year.
Additionally, the mock has Casey Mise solidly as 1.1 this year. I don't. He finished poorly. 1.1 picks don't do that. I do still have him in my top five picks, but not at 1.1.
Mise dropping out of the 1.1 pick could really hurt us at a chance of getting a third baseman here.
I would then see Joey Bart going 1.1, Nick Madrigal 1.2, and Mise 1.3.
At 1.4 and 1.5 would be Alec Bohm and Jonathan India. India has been favorite to go to the Mets at 1.6, but, with the decline of Singer, he just isn't going to last that far.
That would leave my Mets pick to be either Singer, Liberatore, Travis Swaggerty, or Shane McClanaham.
Tough call... best player available: McClanahan... best need: Swaggerty.
I go with best player available, regardless of position. Sorry Tom.
Lastly, let's talk character, best player available and Luke Heimlich.
Heimlich is, right now, the best starting pitcher in college baseball.
His stat line for the #3 ranked Oregon State (44-10-1) this year is just stupid: 16-G, 15-ST, 14-1, 2.49, 104.2-IP, 139-K, 21-BB.
And yet he will probably go un-drafted i this year's draft. That's right. He probably will not be picked in all 40 rounds.
You see, it came to baseball's attention before the draft, and when he was eligible as a junior, that he was a convicted sex offender. He pleaded guilty in 2015 of molesting his six-year out niece when he was 15-years old.
Go back and read that again. Any chance he had of being picked in last year'd draft ended the day this story hit the airwaves.
Heimlich could have walked away from both his school and the game or the school could have given him the boot, but neither happened and he returned this year to put up the best stat line in college baseball.
All this will probably mean nothing for the three days beginning Monday. Teams don't even send scouts out to watch him.
Would you watch a sex offender that molested a 5-year old?

the same slot)
From John
Sickles -
Listed at 6-1, 185, India is a right-handed hitter and
thrower born December 15th, 1996. His glove is extremely well respected,
featuring above-average range, arm strength, and reliability at third base,
with some scouts feeling that he would be a decent shortstop.
What’s made the difference this year is offensive
development. India has always had a good eye for the strike zone but it’s been
even sharper this year; he’s already set a career high in walks and his BB
percentage has doubled. Part of that may be because pitchers are working him
more carefully but there seems to be genuine improvement in his selectivity as
well.
The obvious key this year has been more power, as he’s more
than doubled his isolated power numbers. He got 45 power grades pre-season but
that’s at least 50 now with some sources going as high as 55. Kiley McDaniel at
Fangraphs noted that India is in better physical condition this year. This has
resulted in more bat speed and since he already had a grasp of the strike zone,
the result was a breakout.

ReplyDeleteKelenic was on someone's Mets draft board. He would take a few years, though.
Banfield nice in round 2.
Heimlich - it would depend on his story. If he is repentive and fully "fixed", I'd take a flyer on him. Develop him in the minors, trade him.
Helluva game last night, huh? mets fans have seen games like that 100's of times before. Always sickening. Typically Met. Swarzak should have been back here.
ReplyDeleteLogan Gilbert should definitely be in the mix at 6 he has dominated college baseball, has the size, arsenal and should be ready soon. Go Hatters.
ReplyDeleteCaptain:
ReplyDeleteGilbert has earned full consideration. Should definitely be a top 10 pick at worst
Tom -
ReplyDeleteThe Mets are not a 27-29 team.
They are a 16-28 team that happened to go 11-1 at the start,
Right now, they have the tenth pick in next year's draft.
Tom -
ReplyDeleteRe: Heimlich
Can you imagine the headlines on the back of The New York Post and Daily News?
No, this kid will never wear a Mets uniform.
Mack, you may be right there.
ReplyDeleteActually, the Mets opened 11 of 12 and then, when they had slipped to 19-18, won 5 of 6. Other than those 2 win streaks they are a ridiculously bad 11-27.
I hung out with my brother last night, who has always loved the Mets and HATED how they do things - he no longer watches the Mets - he bellowed, "DIDN'T I TELL YOU THEY NEEDED MUCH MORE IN THE BULLPEN THIS OFF SEASON?"
Two straight years where the bullpen is like an incendiary device. Idiots.
Tom -
ReplyDeleteThe human corrector-tape. What would I do without you?
Don't be surprised, if either of these two are still available when we pick in the third round, than Sandy goes back to the pen. The University of Florida's Michael Byrne (30-G, 2-1, 1.90, 47.1-IP, 47-K) and USF's Andrew Perez (24-G, 6-3, 2.34, 42.1-IP, 50-K) are probably the two top relievers.
Banfield in the second round excites me. Madrigal in round one is still the prayer. If he’s not an option, Kelenic seems to have the best tools and I am reading about Swaggerty striking out quite a bit. That reminds me of Jaren Kendall, who everyone had in th top ten and fell to 24 to the Dodgers. He has really struggled in the minors.
ReplyDeleteId be thrilled in Bohm fell. India feels like a good sold pick, which is what you need if you have the minor league depth the mets have. The draft isnt really based on just talent alone, so you never know. Maybe someone has a deal with someone so others drop. Or maybe as Mack suggests if the Nola comp is fair, Singer ends up going 3-5. Mets need position players at the moment in the draft. I prefer the cubs model of taking position players and finding pitching outside the top picks. It seems more sustainable.
ReplyDeleteNothing like picking 6th in a 5 player draft.
No way in the world should we draft Madrigal... even if he turns into a hall of famer we cannot risk the bust factor of a 5’7 player in the first round...
ReplyDeleteso India Kelenic or top arm available. Maybe Gorman.... but let’s play odds ... only one altuve in the past 20!years
Texas -
ReplyDeleteA catcher would be a gould pick at #2, especially since Bart will be gone either at #1 or #2
Swaggerty does have a bat miss ball problem which could only get worse in the pros. His BA has been dropping. You may be right but this is an incredibly blah draft for bats.
Forget Madrigal. He is gone well before we pick.
Robb -
ReplyDeleteGo to my College pitcher post that went up at 10am and read the quote from the guy at MLB that writes about the draft.
He believes in Singer.
Robb -
ReplyDeleteDon't worry... we'll get you a top five pick next year
Eddie -
ReplyDeleteGod, I hate this draft.
I change my mind.
The best guy that will be available. without being a sex offender, is Singer.
I go big RHP again.
Some recent mocks have the Mets taking Kelenic. Fangraphs seems to think they’ve shifted focus to him and that’s their pick.
ReplyDeleteI remember the year they took Cechini. He came out to Citifield right before the draft and they fell in love with him. All I’ve heard was the Mets wanted a athletic college bat this year and now something changed. Maybe it’s legit or maybe their trying to make teams theyre off a particular player, not wanting to let teams know how in love they are with someone specific. With Cechini, they screwed up.
All I know is that the Mets can’t afford to worry about when this pick gets to Citi. They need to build their system up and must take the best player available. Preferably a bat. They tried building with young pitching and a World Series later, they’re thisclose to another rebuild. They need to do it with bats this time.
Charles, I am with you - bats, bats, bats. And pray that Peterson, Kay, Dunn, Szapucki, Crismatt turn out 2 to 3 solid starters.
ReplyDeleteTom you’re right pray pray pray
ReplyDeleteInteresting that last year's super pitcher, Hunter Greene, is 0-4, 7.92 ERA in his 31 inning career so far, although his 3 of his last 4 outings seem to indicate he may be improving and getting it.
ReplyDeleteDunn is 7-9, 1.51 WHIP in 2017 and 2018 in St Lucie. Kay is 2-3, 4.40 in 9 Columbia starts.
Both may be good down the road. We'll see.
On Mets Draft
ReplyDeletePersonally, I never follow it.
Why you ask?
Because I am more concerned about the here and now NY Mets, and I figure that the GM here and his scouting department can handle the rest. Translated out, we get what we get player wise from the draft, and the variables can change any moment.
Until a player reaches AA Binghamton, I never follow very many drafted players unless they are playing remarkably well where they are and being noticed.
The Here and Now
The 2018 NY Mets have to start hitting better and the bullpen has to be revamped somewhat despite opinion to keep it intact as it is. Let's be truthful here, it simply is not anywhere near good enough and how is it supposed to all of a sudden get a lot better?
How many decent Mets starts have to go to waste because of the bullpen before everyone sees this? Let's get'rdone and now! Never give up.
Idea Pool
The Mets cannot keep trotting out the same relievers who have not gotten the job done. Las Vegas and Binghamton have a group of relievers, namely Tyler Bashlor, Drew Smith and Eric Hanhold, Tyler Bashlor, Dave Roseboom (a rare lefty find), Josh Torres, and "The R. Ryan Express". Maybe just pick three or four of the best of this group and let them takeover for three or four Mets relievers who haven't been getting the job done lately. This would allow perhaps correction being made to the three or four Mets relievers being sent down.
I realize that the new Mets relievers from the minors would have to be somehow added to the Mets roster and all, and there are stipulations/financials involved beyond my understanding with this. So this is an idea only. But hopefully a good one. We need changes made and the Mets need to relax more and play better baseball soon. It's too tight. Winning corrects this.
I might also consider bringing up INF's Jeff McNeil Binghamton, .324 BA and 1B Peter Alonso, .324 BA. I am certain we can find two Mets players who could use a little more batting instruction down in the minors. The team is not hitting well right now.
Maybe this could end all the Mets/AAA players riding the "endless train" between Vegas and NY, getting to NY and then not getting much done.
You probably know who they are as well.
But it's way too early to be writing this team off for 2018.
