Mack - Some 'minor observations' - SPs

Good morning.

Las Vegas –

Corey Oswalt -

Friday:         Oswalt’s start on Friday was cancelled, causing rumors to fly that he would be going to Queens as backup to Seth Lugo for this last Sunday’s game vs. the Yanks (never happened).

Binghamton -

            Nabil Crismatt

                        Saturday:                 4-IP, 6-H, 6-ER, 8-K, 2-BB, 3.29

Aces have bad games but it is very seldom that you see an ace give up seven runs in one inning. It’s even less seeing a manager not pull the pitcher either during that inning or after it. All that did was lead to Crismatt giving up another run. Hopefully, this isn’t a sign for the future. Damn. He was doing so well.

            Justin Dunn -

                        Sunday:                    7-IP, 2-H, 0-R, 9-K, 4-BB, WIN (1-0), 0.00

                                                            Wow!

Could you have a better debut at AA? Yeah, I know, he walked four batters but who cares. This was an incredible week for Justin.

St. Lucie:

            Justin Dunn

                        Monday:                  7-IP, 2-H, 0-R, 10-K, 1-BB, 2.36

Wow! This is the kind of outing we were hoping for from this young man. Was backed up with two home runs from Andres Gimenez, the other ++ chip we have in Lucy.

This is 0-ER in his last two games (12-IP)

Harol Gonzalez

            Saturday:                 8-IP, CG, 3-H, 1-ER, 7-K, 0-BB, LOSS (0-4)
Once again, absolutely no support for Gonzalez in a brilliantly executed game. Look, it’s a minor league and it really doesn’t matter who wins this, but tell that to Harol!

Columbia:

Anthony Kay

            Friday:          6.2-IP, 5-H, 1-ER, 7-K, 1-BB, 4.02

Kay bounces back from his poor June 1st outing and now have five ++ outings out of 10. This is not Ace stats. He’s 23 years old pitching at the A-level. Come on Anthony.

            David Peterson

                        Saturday:     8-IP, 6-H, 1-ER, 10-K, 0-BB, 1.82

Peterson gave up one run in the first and then never looked back. He now have given up only 6-ER (7-starts) in his last 46.2-IP.

There is an opening in the St. Lucie rotation caused by the Dunn promotion and you should see this guy heading to Florida soon.

(wow… good guess… Peterson was promoted to St. Lucie last night)

DSL-1:
The DSL seasons started this past Saturday. These are the guys, based on their 2017 record or the signing bonus they received in the off-season, are either ‘blue’ or ‘red’ prospects. IMO, Jimenez is definitely the real deal

            Malky Mena –        (2017: 3-3, 2.13) -

            Miguel Ramirez – (2017: 6-2, 1.76) -

DSL-2:

            Jurgen Jimenez – (2017: 5-2, 2.40) –

                        Tuesday:       4-IP, 3-H, 1-ER, 3-K, 1-BB, 2.25

I wasn’t happy to see Jimenez still ‘down there’. He deserved a trip stateside after his stellar season last year. We shall live with it.

He was piggy-started with Robert Colina in his first start and is once again off to a great ‘start’.

            David Marcano –

                        Wednesday -           2-IP, 1-H, 0-R 1-K, 0-BB, 0.00

I find it surprising that the Mets are ‘starting’ Marcano off as a reliever this season, but we’ll keep him on this list for a few games and see if things change back.

            Jorge Cespedes – (2017: 6-2, 2.03) –

                        Wednesday:                        3-IP, 5-H, 4-ER, 2-K, 3-BB, 12.00

Not the kind of debut we were hoping for this season.
            Robert Colina –

                        Tuesday:       3-IP, 1-H, 0-R, 7-K, 2-BB, 0.00.

The 17-year old Colina was a signee in the off season and it’s good to see that he’s already up on the bump.

Seven strikeouts facing 22 batters.

            Hector Rodriguez –

                        Friday:          3.2-IP, 2-H, 2-ER, 4-K, 3-BB, 2.35

H-Rod’s second start this year was sort of all over the place. The 20/year old converted RP went 3-0, 1.86 last year in 13 appearances.

Current rankings…

Outstanding outings…     Dunn, Dunn v2.0, Jimenez, Colina, Kay, Gonzalez, Peterson (great week for the aces)

            Work Needed…                  Crismatt

  1. I'm wondering if some of these DSL guys get moved up when the stateside Rookie Leagues get started (and the draft choices get placed). I'm fine with them playing in live competition.

BTW, my man, Wilfred Astudillo, Switch-hitting catcher who just turned 18, has played in only 2G but is 6/9 (2B, HR) with an OPS of 1.778 (0 K's).

  2. Hopefully, Peterson to AA, Dunn to AAA by year end

  3. If SzapuCki and Humphreys had not gone down to TJS last year, we'd be flush.

  4. Oh, the Mets are indeed flushing...the entire season.

  5. It will be interesting to watch Dunn as he progresses......hopefully the past few starts are the norm (oh and I would keep him away from Vegas at all costs).

Strong finish to the year in Binghamton and a move to Syracuse for the start of
the 2019 season (I like saying Syracuse and not Vegas).

  6. Mike, that makes sense - my thoughts were Dunn maybe getting 2-3 starts in Vegas - risky, yes, but it would ramp up his degree of difficulty.

Speaking of Vegas, Flexen gave up two 3 run innings yesterday, but nicely walked one and fanned 10. Maybe a good sign, maybe not. We'll see.

  7. I attended the Binghamton vs Trenton game Saturday night (poor me! I mean, watching them lose 9 - 1, then listening on the radio to the Yanks beat the Mets on the way home? Sheesh!) Don't know if Crismatt always pitches that slow, or if there was something wrong with him, or if the posting of the pitch speed on the scoreboard was off, but his 'fastball' was in the low to mid 80's; can't make it to the big leagues with stuff like that...
