Good morning.
Las Vegas –
Corey Oswalt -
Friday - 5-IP,
6-H, 3-ER, 5-K, 1-BB, 5.32
Another eh (I’m not using the word meh anymore) PCL
performance from a quality arm that we are ruining in this league.
Binghamton -
Nabil Crismatt –
Thursday - 8-IP,
5-H, 1-ER, 9-K, 1-BB, WIN (8-4), 3.43
This is the kind of outing that defines what an ‘ace’ is all about. Crismatt
is there, and would be on to AAA by now if it wasn’t for the horrors of the
PCL. Leave him here folks.
Justin Dunn –
Friday - 6-IP,
7-H, 6-ER, 7-K, 2-BB, LOSS (1-2), 3.32
Dunn had four outstanding outings until this clunker.
Hopefully, he got this out of system and will bring his ERA down again below
three.
St. Lucie:
David Peterson –
Saturday - 6.1-IP,
6-H, 3-ER, 5-K, 0-BB, LOSS (1-1), 3.97
This is about the limit of the kind of outing an ace can go
through. He also now has the kind of ERA that doesn’t make him an ace. Growing
pains? We’ll see.
Harol Gonzalez –
Monday - 5-IP,
6-H, 3-ER, 5-K, 1-BB, LOSS (0-5), 3.09
I seem to keep writing the same thing. Ace’s are not supposed
to throw outings like this. Gonzalez continues to slip back into the pack of
non-prospect pitchers that fill out these rosters.
Columbia:
Anthony Kay –
Thursday - 4-IP, 9-H, 5-ER, 5-K, 0-BB, LOSS
(3-4), 4.74
Kay has only had one good outing out of the last four and I’m
starting to worry whether he is a top chip in this system. I’ll give him a
couple of more starts before I grade him down.
Joe Cavallaro - 5.2-IP, 4-H, 1-ER, 4-K, 3-BB, WIN
(7-2), 2.02
I’m getting more impressed every day about this guy. Next… I’d
like to see more pitch control. 98 pitches through 5.2-IP won’t hack it in the
big time.
I would look for a promotion here real soon.
Brooklyn –
Jaison Viera –
Monday - 4-IP,
2-H, 1-ER, 6-K, 3-BB, 2.25
Viera earned ‘blue’ stats last year when he went 3-1, 1.88
for the GCL-Mets. I think we may have something here.

Christian
James - 6.2-IP, 2-H, 0-R, 6-K, 2-BB, WIN
(1-0), 0.00
The 20-year old has now had two starts for the Cyclones and
have throw 11.2 innings of scoreless ball. This comes after a scoreless start
for St. Lucie. Maybe we should start calling him “Scoreless Christian”.
GCL –
Willy Tavares -
Monday - 4-IP, 1-H, 0-R, 4-K, 4-BB, 0.00
We wrote a lot about Tavares last year when he started for
the DSL2 team (8-3, 2.31). He’s off to an equally great start here.
Jurgen Jimenez -
Saturday -
4-IP, 7-H. 3-R, 2-K, 2-BB,
6.75
J.J.
has made the move stateside and is off to a rocky start. I dropped him from a
red to blue star chip, but he could easily work his way back up there with a
few great outings.
DSL-

Cesar Loaiza –
Thursday - 5-IP, 5-H, 0-R, 6-K, 1-BB, WIN (3-0), 0.61
This was the first start of first year DSL pitcher, 19-year
old Loaiza, after three other relief appearances. He has now given up only one
earned run in 14.2-IP. Let’s hope they keep him in the rotation.
Current rankings…
Outstanding outings… Tavares, Crismatt, Cavillaro, Loaiza
Work Needed… Kay, Peterson
Jason V was great again yesterday in his 2nd Bklyn start. Nice.
ReplyDeleteIs Peterson the real deal? Struggling in the FSL so far.
Tom -
ReplyDeleteI think he is but he;s not dominant right now, is he?
And neither is Dunn and Kay
Interesting blog postings today
ReplyDeleteOn Mike Freire's blog on Wilmer Flores, so what to do there?
To me Mike, Wilmer Flores kind of is what he is. He has shown us that he is a very good and very useful sixth man off the bench, like in NBA jargon. He can play a few games in succession at a high level. Expecting him to be a full time player though, may not always work out although you can see him trying his best out there to be that player. Wilmer really is still relatively young, and he is determined. But right now, three games in a row, late inning pinch hitter with promise who can make solid contact off the bench too.
On Erica Lay's - Jake, Thor, and runs scored...
To me, it has been pretty much all about the bullpen really in 2018 thus far. If so many games were not lost strictly by the bullpen, the Mets "might still be in the thick of it" within the NL, even with their often limited hitting offense.
Luckily, the Mets do have some pretty decent minor league relievers available to them at both the Vegas and especially Binghamton levels. All have had some success and all throw relatively hard. I like Binghamton's "Ryan Express 2" a lot and "Harry Callahan" once he is out of sickbay. The Mets already have Tim Peterson and Tyler Bashlor up here, plus Drew Smith. So why not use them more? (Hmm)
I am a big fan of Mets starters Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and Zachary Wheeler who pitched an outstandingly well again last night. I really hope that the Mets can bring all three of these starters back in 2019 and beyond, add in two awesome lefty starters and shake.
I need to see Steven Matz gel now and then stay there. I feel that he can accomplish this feat. The possibly of making Drew Smith a starter, does make some sense to me. He may however need final tweaking here in the bigs regarding his hitting locations, but he is young and can easily accomplish this. Maybe a kid starter more like say a Red Sox AAA Jalen Beeks too, for a six man rotation? (Hmm)
What about the current NY Mets bullpen?
Zach pitched lights out again last night, and was forced to witness the falling down of the bullpen again. Maybe night vision goggles would help from a long distance? Tim Peterson was awesome, I had wished that they would have let him actually finish the game. Manager Callaway's dugout face tells me that he gets it.
What's my take on Familia? Arm or shoulder stiffness comes to mind. He isn't the same guy right now and it is not psychological in any way, I do not think.
The Mets may have to throw a dart with which minor league relievers to call up next. Ideally speaking, maybe "The Ryan Express 2" and/or left hander Dave Roseboom. I think the Mets could start using Tim Peterson more as well. If they can get Drew Smith or someone else starting, then they could put Seth Lugo back in the bullpen closing out games, which would be absolutely great. Seth excels there and he balances things out for the other relievers.
There is no greater time than now to come onboard with this 2018 NY Mets team. I just get the overall feeling that we are witnessing the very beginning of something truly great here. We'll see.
