St. Lucie 3 - Jupiter 2

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (May 31, 2018) – The St. Lucie Mets edged the Jupiter Hammerheads 3-2 on Thursday at First Data Field.

Relief pitchers Matt Blackham, Stephen Nogosek and Alex Palsha combined for five shutout innings and one hit.

Blackham worked the fifth and sixth to get the win. Nogosek tossed the seventh and eighth without surrendering a hit. Palsha allowed just a one-out single in the ninth but otherwise worked a drama-free save.

The Mets broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning. Dale Burdick reached on a leadoff walk and stole second base uncontested. Burdick went to third on a Gene Cone single and came home on a ground out to second base by Jacob Zanon to put the Mets up for good, 3-2.

Mets starter Michael Gibbons struggled out of the gate but settled down to limit the Hammerheads to two runs over four innings.

The Hammerheads took a 1-0 lead just two batters into the game when Brian Miller stroked a RBI single. However, Miller was caught stealing third base by catcher Anthony Dimino for the first out of the inning. Later in the first inning Joe Dunand was thrown out at home by the leftfielder Zanon while trying to score on a base hit.

Hammerheads starter Jorge Guzman turned in a quality start but suffered the defeat. He gave up three runs in six innings.

Andres Gimenez went 2 for 3. His RBI double in the third inning tied the game 1-1. Desmond Lindsay then lifted a sac fly to bring home Zanon for a 2-1 lead.

Jupiter briefly tied the game 2-2 in the fourth on a RBI sac fly from Miller.

The Mets avoided a sweep and won vs. Jupiter for the first time in six games.
