Press Release:
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (July 10, 2018) – Joe Cavallaro fired six scoreless innings in his St. Lucie debut as the Mets defeated the Charlotte Stone Crabs 5-1 at Charlotte Sports Park on Tuesday.
Cavallaro, who was a first half All Star for the Columbia Fire Flies, was promoted to St. Lucie last week. Tuesday was his first start in the FSL and it was terrific. He blanked the Stone Crabs for six innings on just 72 pitches. He gave up just two hits and one walk while striking out six.
Cavallaro finished his night by retiring the final 12 batters he faced.
The top of the Mets order was lethal. Leadoff hitter Luis Carpio went 4 for 5. No. 2 hitter Andres Gimenez went 3 for 5 for the second straight game. He finished a home run shy of the cycle. T.J. Rivera continued his rehab assignment and went 2 for 5 with a run and a RBI from the No. 3 spot.
Gimenez gave the Mets a 1-0 lead in the third on a RBI single that extended his hitting streak to nine games.
Jeremy Vasquez clubbed a RBI double in the sixth to make it 2-0 Mets.
Thomas McIlraith allowed a run in the seventh but stranded two runners in scoring position to keep the Mets ahead 2-1.
Rivera and Gene Cone notched RBI singles in the eighth to provide the Mets a 4-1 lead. Gimenez capped the scoring with a RBI triple to make it 5-1 in the ninth.
Matt Pobereyko got the final out of the ninth for his fifth save.
Ian Strom went 2 for 3 with a run.
Mike Paez had a hit and a walk.
The Mets pounded out 14 total hits and snapped a five-game losing streak.
Charlotte starter Josh Fleming pitched a quality start in his FSL debut. He allowed two runs on nine hits in six innings.
We cannot be cavalier about how well Cavallaro has pitched.
ReplyDeleteAndres Gimenez slump is OVER...16 for his last 35. Time to think about getting him to Binghamton. I have no doubt he can cope there. If Toronto can have Bichette and Vlad Jr in AA, we can have our kid there too.
