No, no, "The Seventeeners" is not a new Netflix original content series. It's not about Harry taking Sally to the senior prom and being chosen as prom king and queen.
What it is, is this: some in the Mets minors play this game at the very tender age of 17.
How are they doing? Glad you, as always, ask the right question. Pretty good! On a scale of 1 -20, about 17, I'd say.
The other day, I did an article on red hot Mark Vientos, but he's too old at age 18, so he does not belong here.
Here's 5 of the Seventeeners:
GCL METS
RONNIE MAURICIO the wunderkind mega bonus baby, skipping the DSL in his first season, has slumped a bit lately, in a 3 for 29 swoon. But he continues to make contact...like with (older) first rounder Jarred Kelenic, little slumps are good learning tools. I am sure there is another hot streak coming for Ronnie Mo.
SIMEON WOODS RICHARDSON - our 2018 2nd round fireballer is 8.1 innings in and has allowed 2 runs (both unearned) and fanned 11 in 4 outings. Sweet!
STANLEY CONSUEGRA - the 6'2", 167 OF is doing OK in stateside ball, hitting .209/.295/.350 in 53 games. He just had a 3 for 3 game with a walk, a homer, and 3 RBIs, too, which is terrific.
DSL METS
ADRIAN HERNANDEZ - the young bonus baby fella is heating up of late, a good sign, and has jumped up to .255/.353/.396 in 49 games, with 9 of 12 in steals.
FELIX VALERIO - this 17 year old is a new name to me, and is doing quite well. Valerio is listed at 5'7", 165.
Mr. Felix has been on a recent tear (.500 over his last 10 games) and, through 53 games, he is hitting .303/.402/.388 with just 15 Ks and 12 of 15 in steals. Pretty impressive.
Equally impressive is 52 games in the field for the 17 year old in a very error-prone league at 2B and only 4 errors.

Hey, the Houston Astros have a little superstar named Jose Altuve...we have Felix the Cat.
Eddie Kranepool is not impressed by any of this - he made his major league debut with the Mets at 17 years, 318 days.

You missed an obvious Janis Ian reference about having learned the truth at 17...
ReplyDeleteExcept they learn the truth later than 17 - in 3-4 years, they'll say, "OMG, I play in a Wilpon-owned organization!"
ReplyDeleteActually, since the Mets have already had over 50 guys play in the majors this season, they might be excited to have a greater chance at there being at least a small chance at the big show.
Maybe WILPON is an acronym that's been present all along:

Clever, Reese......also sad and true.
ReplyDeleteI am intrigued by Mauricio....could be a future star in the making.
Reese, nice.
ReplyDeleteMike, I saw Mauricio is thought by some to be a possible future Fernando Tatis, Jr, who supposedly is baseball's current # 2 prospect behind the great one, Vlad G Jr.
If Vlad were added to the Mets tomorrow, he'd automatically be their best hitter from day 1.
Adrian Hernandez 3 for 4 and a walk and HR thru 6 innings today. The Baby Bull's bat is starting to stir.
ReplyDeleteAdrian Hernandez 3 for 5 on Saturday.
