Good morning.
Five things the Mets still need to do to contend in 2019
–
Cano improves the infield and Bruce helps clear up the corner
outfield logjam. The Mets could use a short-term upgrade over Juan Lagares in
center field -- remember, once Yoenis Cespedes returns from his dual heel
surgeries, that'll push Michael Conforto to center full-time -- otherwise
catcher stands out as the club's most glaring positional need. Their catching
depth chart:
Travis d'Arnaud: Currently rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and may not be
ready for Opening Day.
Kevin Plawecki: Hit .240/.315/.370 in 2018 with below-average defensive
numbers (per Baseball Prospectus).
Tomas Nido: MLB.com's No. 10 Mets prospect. Went 10 for 84 (.167) in
his brief MLB cameo in 2018.
Mack – I not only don’t see much here but I
don’t see an easy road to find a replacement. Miami’s Riamuto would cost us one
of our top starters. And Grandal would cost us a #2 draft pick. That leaves
Ramos who I would make a strong attempt to sigh to a three year free agent
contract. Our pipeline is very light here so we need to make every effort to
sign him.
Adding Two Teams Could Simplify Baseball Structure –
With
expansion sneaking back into the conversation, Major League Baseball has a
golden opportunity to turn back the clock without sacrificing a dollar of
revenue.
How about adding two teams, creating a network of 32, and
dividing them into four eight-team leagues? The four league champions could
meet in a Championship Series that would determine the two teams worthy of that
year’s World Series.
Sources say Mets doctor performed
minor knee surgery on Robinson Canó
after 2018 season –
The surgery was considered minor, and Canó, 36, is expected
to be a “full go” for spring training, sources said. He leads the majors with
2,078 games played since his debut in 2005.
Mack – You have to assume that the Mets would
never had gone forward with the trade for Cano if their Doctor didn’t sign off
on the success of the operation.
Jeff Sullivan/Fangraphs on Edwin Diaz –
And lastly…
We will immediately post up any
Mets transactions through the use of ‘Open Thread’ posts without any delay
regardless of when another post started or is ending.
Please keep checking back for the
next three days to see how many more strings BVW pulled.
I am in total agreement with you Mack, Ramos should be the way we go. The only person i would trade for is Kluber, and i don’t mind giving up Nimmo and Giminez for him. Everyone else we add to this roster should be picked up as a free agent acquisition.
ReplyDeleteSince BVW is the crafty dealer type, i would hope he considers a trade for Greinke. They have to take salary back in the form of Lagares, Frazier and Vargas (plus Giminez). That would mean we would cost roughly 8mil this year and we would be on the hook for 60 mil for next two years.
DeleteI think he still has good stuff and moving to a pitchers park from that heavy hitters park would probably make him cry young bound once again. I also think we aren’t on his no trade list, so i would be very interested in his services.
Regarding catcher:
ReplyDeleteWhat about trying to get Mejia from the Padres?
They received Mejia and I believe 2 other prospects for Brad Hand last year. (I still do not understand how last years brain trust was not able to at least get Mejia for Familia last year).
Perhaps Gsellman could be used to get Mejia. It would be exciting to see his reported throwing from the knees to pick off runners straying too far away from 1st base.
I watched him throw from his knees for the El Paso Chihuahuas vs. the Las Vegas 51s. He is the real deal and has surprising pop for a little guy. More importantly he doesn't strike out and gives you quality at bats.
ReplyDeleteDiaz is pure gold - so glad we got him.
ReplyDeleteCatcher - I would take the best of Grandal and Ramos if the Realmuto Sweepstakes get ridiculous.
I still hope Mazeika takes a huge stride in 2019. A left handed hitting catcher would be great as a # 2.
Going from 30 up to 32 teams would be fine, but then I'd want 8 and not 4 playoff teams.
Hopefully there will be lots of Open Threads in the week ahead.
Bob that is the reason last season's Lack of Brain Trust has been upgraded.
Zozo, if we get Corey Kluber, we have to get Arnold Schwarzeneggar as an announcer. Picture him saying "Corey Kluber" - priceless. Kluber would give the Mets a Destroyer Rotation.
Morning guys -
ReplyDeleteI expect a new catcher by the end of the meetings.
I also expect the signing of Andrew Miller.
From your mouth to gods ears
DeleteIt seems the day before the winter meetings starts is a good time to speculate on trade ideas especially now that BVW is running the show. How about calling the Pirates and inquiring about Starling Marte and Francisco Cervelli? Fill CF and C with 1 trade. Cervelli is owed 11.5 and Marte 10 mil, and it would depend on the cost going back but the Pirates always seem to be willing trade partners for the Mets. Anyone have interest in either of them and what would you give up?
ReplyDeleteJeff, interesting trade idea. How about Nimmo, Plawecki and Frazier for Cervelli and Marte - the Pirates would have to give us a top 5 prospect, too, to compensate for the value of Nimmo's controllable seasons.
ReplyDeleteMorning Mack:
ReplyDeleteZozo I agree with you on Greinke, mind you I also like Kluber?
But AZ might make that deal to just shed salary?
I would then call Cincy to look to trade one of Wheeler-Matz or Lugo
the catcher I want is a switch hitter Tucker Barnhart, and Nick Senzel as my future 3rd baseman
Aswell as signing Miller id like the Mets to sign Kelvin Herrera
And 5th sign Billy Hamilton,i believe would be a valuable late inning defensive player ,pinch runner ,double switch kinda guy
Steve
They need a lefty reliever. an elite one would be nice. A depth starter thats not lugo or a lugo replacement. (diaz, left reliever, lugo, gsellman, loogy, and 2 depth rhrp, is not a bad bullpen). Im fine with lageres for the time being. if nimmo or conforto ends up being moved sure go get a centerfielder.
ReplyDeleteI would go for a good defensive catcher who hits right handed. Just to help thor and matz defensively. Im less concerned about producing runs from the catcher spot then preventing them.
Be careful of Grienke: his velocity has gone down every year and this year his average was 88.
ReplyDeleteTom, you’re going to give your trash for Marte and Cervelli but had to give up two of your best prospects for a 36 year old Cano on that contract and an all-star in Diaz? Start thinking Nimmo, Gimenez, and Gsellman. Don’t forget, Marte is uber-talented and Cervelli is a defensive beast.
If you are going to contend behind this rotation beginning in 2019, and i’m good with that being the plan, when whoever starts behind the plate on opening day needs to be a foundational piece. A guy who you expect to be there - and be effective - for the duration of the window (say, through 2023). It can’t be a one year rental, (if you get Realmuto you need to extend him immediately) and it can’t be a guy who will likely be in decline starting in 2020 or ‘21.
