The New York Mets have signed infielder Jed Lowrie to a 2-year, $20mil deal.

  1. I have no idea what he's doing, but this is a good signing.

  2. Now this is confusing.
Yes, Lowrie is better than potential bench players.
But, $10 million per year does not seem like bench player money.
    What is Vanwagenen's plan here?

I have to say, the salary for Lowrie this year would have been much better spent toward a contract for Harper.

  3. I would think that Marwin Gonzalez would have been a better fit at this salary level.

  4. My guess is Frazier is history and 2019 will not be McNeil's year.

That again, he could be gone too.

  5. Trust me...

Word I'm getting is we are far from done.

    1. Just what are you hearing Mack?

Are you hearing details, or just generalities?

Jed Lowrie’s 4.9 WAR in 2018 was worth $39.4M via FanGraphs.
Lowrie’s 3.6 WAR in 2017 was worth $28.6M. The #Mets signed him for 2 years $20M. This is an awesome deal for the team.

  7. He most likely be a super sub like Zobriet .. I still feel we may have seen the end of Frazier & Brown in Mets unicorns (maybe trade them to the brewers ?)

  8. RIGHT NOW...

plan is for Lowrie to bavk up Rosario and McNeil to backup Frazier

    1. Is that a figurative 11,
      Or a literal 11?

      Enquiring minds want to know....

I hope your "far from done" statement .... means that Harper is being pursued.

  9. This move is a little baffling, looks like management is doing everything it can to reduce McNeil's chance to play. He had over 200 ab's and was probably our bestnall around hitter from the time he started playing. I just thing the 10M were paying Lowrie, 20M were paying Cano and name anyone else could have been put to better use ie Harper. We currently o my have 4 outfielders so these infielders need to be in Florida Now preparing for the outfield. Having doubts about this new GM, Great that he's able to spend some money but doesn't seem to be spending it wisely.

  10. Those Frazier-Alonso peptalks are gonna have to be long distance calls

Or turn him into an available trade candidate of a ++ OF or SP5

  12. Mack, Do think after what McNeil showed last year as a soon to be 27 yr old he is only worth a 4 or 5 OF or 5th Starter? Not a big fan of trading young players/prospects for 34-35 yr olds that are just about done. Would just hate to trade a young hitter with loads of potential and doesn't strike out much, for a spare piece.

  13. Gotta agree with Robb and Mac, a good signing and BVW is nowhere near done. Any day when you pick up a Luis Avilan and Jed Lowrie without giving up anything is a very good day. He seems to have a plan, (that may not include McNeil, almost definitely not Frazier and, I'm afraid, almost definitely not Harper either), but we're going to have to be patient and watch it unfold. And it just might be really good (might not, too, but I'm in his corner at the moment).

    1. No

I guess that BVD has determined that Cesedes will not be healthy for the entire year and the Mets need a quality replacement for...

      Or...

He simply will continue this team into HIS team and McNeil will not be part of it

  14. Team needed to gain depth and that’s what they did. You’ll see McNeil playing all over the diamond including in the outfield. Team is certainly better today but would like to see one more bat. Imagine if he could significantly increase payroll

  15. While somewhat redundant, the move clearly adds much needed depth at good value and without giving up anything. That's a good move. Regarding Harper and/or Machado, a 2 year $20 million commitment is not going to sway them one way or another on that type of investment. Sure, I'd like to see them in on the big boys, but if not, I'd like to see the best 25 man roster with no weak links and good AAA depth. So, they are still weak at the back end of the rotation and still thin in the bullpen. I hope to see at least one quality arm signed to a big league deal, along with some minor league invites ala Avilan and Santiago.

  16. Brodie is the man. Go get 'em.

But what can he do to create a home field advantage? See my article tomorrow at 11 AM on the subject.

  18. Terrible move blocks McNeil and J.D Davis. Syracuse is going to have a good team.

  19. The more I think about this one the more I think this is a good get. Value for cost/years and increased flexibility, but for the life of me if they were going to do this why did they trade for JD Davis? This just buried him another rung down the line.

As it stands for every move I that I like (broxton, Lowrie) or think is smart there is a move that I really dislike (cano) and think wow that is dumb or shortsighted (JD and Plawecki).
