He's young, he's supremely talented: Padres just got a great player.
And they didn't have to trade away a single one of their prized prospects.
That's the beauty of money.
And again, the people who kill Brodie on the Diaz trade -- because he gave up a top prospect -- simply refuse to come to terms with the fact that ownership forced this reality upon him. If the Mets needed to bring in talent, and they did, a lot of it, money simply wasn't going to get it done.
I think Padres did very well here.
AJ Preller, the GM, isn't perfect. It's been messy, with mistakes and blunders, but he's clearly been trying to position and re-position that organization. He's trying to win. I appreciate that, especially after watching Alderson tepid efforts for the past 8 years.
These moves don't come with guarantees. There are always risks. But Machado is a special player and he's very young for a free agent.
I think San Diego made a well-calculated risk towards stepping out from under the shadow of LAD in the southwest by signing Manny.
I would have been happy if the Mets gave him 5 years/$175 MM. I hate the idea of 10 year deals. I think they should be banned, frankly. But the owners would simply use it as a way to squeeze players $$.
His opt out is after year 5, so at 31. The Mets could have done this deal, lets all be honest. They have plenty of money to do these kind of deals, but just dont. The mets will pay cano and lowrie the same amount for the next 2 years as muchado (averages) and then 2/3rd just for cano until Muchado can opt out.
Everyone keeps saying the Mets could do this deal but I call bullshit. If you do this deal then your flexibility going forward is nil. Look at the Mets payroll now and they still likely need to add another starting pitcher (I don't believe BVW is done on this front). They theoretically also have to sign DeGrom to an extension. Ideally they try to extend some of our other young players to reasonable contracts. You sign one of these guys to $30 million and you lose your flexibility in future years. Just look at the Red Sox they can't resign Kimbrel because it will cost them close to $30 million a year because of the salary cap taxes. There is a reason these contracts are more and more rare because they are almost always a complete failure. Young or not "non-hustle/dirty slide" Machado doesn't intrigue me that much. I enjoy watching Harper play but I would rather have 2 really good players and flexibility than risk a crazy deal on him.
Well, the contract is pretty mach in line with what was predicted, but I doubt many folks had the PADRES as the team
ReplyDeletethat would land MM.
Crazy!
He is an excellent player, no doubt. But, what are the odds that he produces to the level that justifies that contract?
Oh and you know Bryce will be next.......10 years and 301 million, perhaps?
One team you knew it wasn't going to be was the Mets. 10 years contracts are coming to an end.

Let me note this...Machado lifetime at Camden: .295/.353/.534.
ReplyDeleteOn the road, much lower: .271/.319/.442.
If his home games were at Citi, would he be more like .265/.315/.430 at home?
And if he were to hit that, what sort of contract would he have earned? Mostly likely less years (8) and less $$ ($25MM per).
And what does that mean as far as the Mets attracting big, young free agent hitters - ever?

ReplyDeleteI like diaz. but id rather have muchado.
He will never stay a Padre for 10 years.

If this sets the bar for Harper, there is no reason the Mets should not be entering negotiations with him.
ReplyDeleteThere’s one very big reason. The Wilpons.

ReplyDeleteDid the Red Sox fans cry about not paying JD Martinez a big contract for all of these reasons last year?
ReplyDeleteThe Wilpons seem to have conditioned many Met fans into making excuses so that they never have to face the heat of explaining themselves.
Sad.
I did an upcoming Machado article - a risk-filled signing
