The
Mets designated catcher Travis d’Arnaud for
assignment. It looks like the d’Arnaud era is over here. I haven’t been much of
a fan of what I have seen here this season, but you would think it would take
move than 23 at-bats to cut a guy loose after TJS. Still, this looks like a win
for #MetsTwitter and may also be a way of rattling the cave of both the
starters and the pen. Everyone one of them loved this class act and I wish him
well wherever he goes.

A-Columbia transferred P Dedniel Nunez to Low-A Brooklyn. The 22-year old starter
came out of the Dominican and has had a decent stat line for the last 3-yrs foe
the GCL-Mets, K-Port – 25-G, 18-starts, 8-5,4.44, 1.29, 106-IP, 115-K. This season
so far for Columbia: 22-IP… 33-K. Is there something wrong here that they aren’t
telling me?
P Alec Kisena was
transferred to A-Columbia from Rookie-Kingsport. Strange stat lines. Came out
of Edmonds C.C. (WA) as a 16th round pick for the Tigers. Had nine
starts for the 2015 CGL-Tigers Tigers that same year (1-1, 2.25, 1.28, 40-IP,
44-K) that would seem to warrant a bump up a level in 2016; however, he has to
sit out the entire 2016 season with an injury. He signed on with the Gateway
Grizzlies (IL) and the Mets signed him this February.
So far,
the 23-year old has pitched in one game (start) for Columbia… 0-1, 2.45, 1.36,
3.2-IP, 1-R, 1-K, 2-BB.
Hopefully, d'Arnaud ends up where he belongs - in Syracuse - plays a lot, stays healthy, and resurfaces when he is in high gear.
ReplyDeleteDedniel is getting a raw deal. I think he will be back soon. I wonder when Szapucki will be?
If Travis is claimed, the Mets are off the hook for his $3.5m.If he clears, I think he's still Mets property and can be sent upstate to get regular ABs and hopefully regain his stroke, though his D will still be a concern.
ReplyDeleteIf he does clear and go upstate, does his $3.5m go with him, or does he get something in line with AAA status?
Bill, as per Wikipedia:
ReplyDeleteOnce a player is designated for assignment, he may be traded. Some teams have been known to designate players for assignment to increase interest in the player, especially among teams that are not at the top of the waiver list (the order of which is determined by record).
(I will add the obvious - in a trade, everything is negotiable.)
If a player is not traded, but has cleared waivers, he may be released from the team. The player is then a free agent and may sign with any team, including the team that just released him. The team that releases him is responsible for the salary the player is owed, less what he is paid by the team that signs him (in practice, the amount paid by the signing team is usually a pro-rated portion of the Major League minimum salary).
I will be utterly stunned if d'Arnaud gets claimed. It's possible that someone will want to play "swap-a-contract" with him; even then, I would be stunned. The most likely outcome is that TDA clears waivers and starts in Syracuse until he shows that he's ready to contribute offensively and defensively in Queens.
ReplyDeleteI am surely in the minority here, but I have no problem with how BVW handled this. Sure, they could've cut d'Arnaud and tried to sign him to a minor-league deal to save $3 million. There's no saying he re-signs here if that happens. Mesoraco was never making the Opening Day roster if Ramos stayed healthy through Spring Training; as things played out, the organizational catching depth would've been even more compromised had they lost him AND d'Arnaud.
Once TDA clears, that's a spot on the 40-man that can be given to a high performing position player in Syracuse, should the need arise.
ReplyDeleteKeon, too, Jack.
ReplyDeleteI'd DFA him and bring up Rajai or Carlos G, as noted in my 1:00 late article today.
Keon is glacially cold - Rajai has been on 13 times in 5 games in AAA.
I was thinking about that as well. Broxton may be the next to go; whether it's for Rajai Davis, or for an infielder so that JD Davis gets some corner outfield reps.
