Syracuse and Rochester Split Doubleheader

Rochester, NY (April 16, 2019) - The Syracuse Mets picked up their first shutout of the season as part of a doubleheader split with the Rochester Red Wings on a chilly Tuesday afternoon at Frontier Field. Rochester won the first game, 3-2, but Syracuse took game two with a 3-0 victory.

In the first game, Rochester (3-9) scored first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Luke Raley doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a Tomás Telis RBI single for a 1-0 lead.

Telis brought home the second Red Wings run as well. With two outs in the fourth, Telis homered over the left-field fence to push the Rochester lead to 2-0.

Syracuse (7-6) tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. Travis Taijeron singled and moved to second on the play because of an error. Dilson Herrera followed with his second home run of the season, a two-run line drive home run to left to square the score at two.

The Red Wings answered right back in the bottom of the inning. Zander Wiel took Mets reliever Tim Peterson deep to lead off the inning for a 3-2 lead that would hold up for the game one win.

In the second game, the Mets used a two-run third to take the lead. Tim Tebow hit a one-out single to right field. Grégor Blanco brought Tebow home with a two-out triple off the center-field wall to post the game’s first run. Danny Espinosa followed with a single to left, scoring Blanco to extend the lead to 2-0.

Syracuse manufactured a third run in the fifth. René Rivera singled, moved to second on a Blanco walk, to third on a sacrifice bunt by Espinosa, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Adeiny Hechavarría.

Syracuse got stellar pitching all day, especially in game two. Former Red Wing Ryan O’Rourke started for the Mets and threw three hitless innings. From there, Corey Taylor, Tyler Bashlor and Arquimedes Caminero combined for four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. The Red Wings did load the bases on a hit and two walks in the seventh, but Caminero induced a double play to end the game.

The Mets wrap up their seven-game road trip in the series finale with the Red Wings at 12:35 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
