Tom Brennan - GREAT METS THOUGHTS AFTER FIVE GAMES

GREAT THOUGHTS!

First and foremost, being 4-1 is great.  It sure beats 1-4.

Let me summarize some thoughts by Great and Not-So-Great....

SPOILER ALERT: MUCH MORE GREAT THAN NOT-SO-GREAT SO FAR.

Great Thoughts:

Dominic Smith and Pete Alonso are both going great guns, making me (and others) wish we had a DH.

Jeff McNeil is being....Jeff McNeil - which, if I am not clear, means terrific.

Wilson Ramos hit like heck in spring training..and has not let up one iota yet.  Anyone pining for a return of the tandem of Lobaton and Nido?  Not me.  I do hope TDA is back very shortly.  I want daily high impact hitting from Mets' catchers.

Robbie Cano is off to a little bit of a slow start - but his game 1 contribution against Mighty Mad Max was magnificent.

Jake was Jake.  'Nuff said.

Edwin Diaz can sure strike out people, can't he, and he, Familia and Wilson have the makings of quite a trio.

Tim Peterson's 2 scoreless outings have been a blessing.

Conforto and Rosario have been solid so far.  So have Wheeler, Matz, and Thor.

Not So Great Thoughts:

Brandon Nimmo is whiffing an awful lot, partly due to facing Mighty Mad Max and Strasburg in games 1 and 2.  Nine times in 19 PAs - say what?  Where's the wood putty?

Juan Lagares has done some good things, including a big homer, but is 2 for 12 with 5 Ks.  Will he hit?  he didn't in spring training.  Should Keon Broxton get more time (2 for 2 and a walk) and Juan get less?

Seth Lugo has been awful.  And Gsellman has allowed just one run but been quite hittable.  Both were unimpressive in spring training.  Should we be starting to worry?

Jason Vargas was competing, but not impressing.  Some long shots were caught.  Will the opponents expose him again?  Do we need a Keuchel?

OK, I'm done.  Let's hope GREAT continues tonight!

  1. Morning Tom -

You sure was right about Alonso.

Smith is going to become a great late inning substitute after he pinch hits and fill ins for at least one day a week so Alonso can reload the guns.

My hopes is that Todd Frazier's return will push McNeil to a starting role in the outfield.

  2. Agree on McNeil in OF, Mack. I lack confidence in using Lagares or Broxton much. McNeil should play almost every game. Career .333/.387/.483.Those guys don't sit.

  3. YES!

    Sign Dallas Keuchel!

We will have at least two rotation spots open next year (Wheeler, Vargas) and you will need to find free agents for the spots (most likely).

Why not Dallas on a bit of a bargain, due to how late he will sign?

Vargas can move to the bullpen as a long/lefty type.

  4. MC's approach to managing the exit of starters and use of releif pitchers seems Terry like.

  5. Keuchel needs to be on the radar screen.
