As the Mets tangle with division rival Philadelphia early this week, a decision looms ahead as to when for the Mets to call up a veteran player.
Two possibilities are Carlos Gomez and Todd Frazier.
Let's compare:
Carlos Gomez is only several weeks older than Todd Frazier.
In 2017, he went .255/.340/.462.
In 2018, he dropped to .208/.298/.336.
He stole 25 of 33 in that span.
He got off to a slow start in AAA after a late spring signing by the Mets, but had a strong game Sunday.
Meanwhile, what about Todd Frazier:
In 2017, he went .213/.344/.428.
In 2018, he went .213/.303/.390.
He stole 13 of 20 the past 2 seasons.
He had just 6 singles in 29 at bats in his rehab through Saturday, in A ball.
While their stats are similar, their situations are not:
Todd has the ace in the hole: a large 2019 guaranteed contract...Carlos Gomez does not.
So, guess which of these 2 fellas is coming to Queens shortly, despite the Mets probably needing an outfielder like Gomez a little bit more right now than an infielder like Frazier?
You guessed it - the man with the guaranteed contract, Todd Frazier.
Recall that the Mets hit poorly in 2017 and 2018 with Todd.
In 15 games in 2019, the Todd-less Mets are averaging an unprecedented 6.1 runs per game (they averaged 5.1 runs for all of 2006).
Absent the contract being a distinct edge to stay on the Mets, I would rather see Carlos Gomez brought up, rather than Frazier, and Jeff McNeil moved to 3rd base.
If Frazier gets called up soon and is forced into the lineup by Mickey, and then does not hit, the fans will be very annoyed.
That much is "guaranteed."
One general comment: As a reader, I think there are too many posts per day. I realize that seems to be the "formula" here, keep up the content, but I think it devalues the quality of the posts AND undercuts the "comments" section of each post. A thread starts and gets pushed away.
ReplyDeleteThis AM we see a post on Alonso. Now Gomez and Frazier. And Tom has promised one at !2:00 on McNeil.
Overkill, IMO.
And seems like a lot of work.
Respectfully,
Jimmy P
Appreciate the feedback, Jimmy.
DeleteHe must play to demonstrate his value or lack thereof. J. D. Davis suffers.
ReplyDeleteI really think Frazier could be the 2019 version of 2018 Jose Reyes. Use Frazier like a bullpen back end guy. Pinch hit him, let him play in blow outs, let him EARN any playing time. The offense ain't broke...don't "fix" it.
DeleteJimmy P -
ReplyDeleteMorning.
I, as editor of Mack's Mets, appreciate your comments about the site.
I fully understand where you are coming from. It must be frustrating sometime coming back to a post to see if anyone commented on what you said and you find that the post has moved down the line.
Yes, we do have a plan here.
We post the minor league results for the 4 full season affiliates, beginning at 6am... every half hour... thus, 6am, 6:30am, 7am, 7:30am.
Our 'lead story always is at 8am.
We try to follow that every two hours with two more original content posts... thus, 10am and noon.
Past that are random information from the teams or 'breaking news' posts that are immediately posted under the name 'Open Thread'
Lastly, we have done this, this way for 10+ years.
This formula is designed to build traffic on the site.
Think of it as a newspaper with different pages. As the day goes on, the lead story may wind up on the second page.
Is this the wrong way to do it?
Well, I would love to hear from more readers regarding this.
Keep those suggestions coming Jimmy.

Vargas, Frazier, Lagares........if only we had a magic wand and could make the salary issues go away.
ReplyDeleteMoney aside, do any of the three belong on the roster at this point?
I know my answer would be NOPE, at least not at the expense of younger players like Davis and Smith who are going to get marginalized when roster moves are made.
It is Mickey's fault he has not worked Smith out in LF.
ReplyDeleteI will say this, Reese...the fit-and-trim Dom Smith is still...slow. It is a shame he is not quicker. He'd be getting outfield reps, for sure.
DeleteI think the mets wise to re-brand Dom Smith, as that rejuvenated, slick-fielding 1B slugger up-and-coming again. He has value as a long-term solution at 1b for some team with a effective pitching piece to trade. Idk what team, but BMW is speeding ahead I'm sure.
