Bowie, MD – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies fell 2-1 to the Bowie Baysox in the series finale Wednesday morning in front of 4,398 at Prince George’s Stadium. Baysox right fielder Ademar Rifiaela hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh off of Ponies starter Harol Gonzalez that proved to be the difference. The loss snaps the Ponies 4-game winning streak as they close out their seven-game road trip at 4-3.
In the eighth, reigning Eastern League Player of the Week Patrick Mazeika hit a solo homer to left, his sixth of the year, to cut the deficit to 2-1. In the ninth, with Tyler Erwin in to save the game for the Baysox, Kevin Kaczmarski led off with a double and Jason Krizan singled, but with runners on the corners and no out Erwin induced a popup from Alfredo Escalera and got Luis Carpio to ground into a double play to end the game.
Gonzalez suffers his first loss of the year to drop to 3-1. He was superb through the first six, retiring thirteen in a row and retiring the side in order in four straight frames from the third through the sixth. He ended up allowing two runs through 6+ on 91 pitches, 63 of them strikes.
The Rumble Ponies (25-16) are off Thursday and open up a four-game Memorial Day Weekend series at NYSEG Stadium against the Trenton Thunder on Friday night.
