P
Dave Roseboom was transferred from AAA-Syracuse
to AA-Binghamton. This is the first return for Dave who had 40 wonderful
appearances for the Rumble Ponies last season (2.72), but stumbled for AAA-Las
Vegas in three outings (3.2-IP, 7-ER, 17.28). He also has had foot problems
going back to 2017 and, hopefully, he can return to form. One thing… we know he
can pitch AA ball. It’s the two times he has hit the ceiling in AAA that needs to be addressed.
Good
luck Dave. We are all rooting for you here at Mack’s Mets.
P
Austin McGeorge was activated off the
AA-Binghamton IL.
McGeorge
came aboard as a 7th round pick in 2016 and wasted no time in impressing
the bullpen coaches throughout the chain… 2.84 in 2016 for Brooklyn… 1.42 for
Columbia in 2017… and 1.89 and 2.73 for St. Lucie in both 2017 and 2018.
And
then came Binghamton. 7.96 in 22-appearances.
He
started this season on the 10-day IL and the hopes is he can turn those AA
numbers around and move up in the affiliates. He’s 24 so a little gitty-up is
needed.
P
Mickey Jannis was transferred from AA-Binghamton
to AAA-Syracuse. Jannis is 31-years old, but, because he is a knuckleball
pitcher, that’s the same as a young man coming out of school.
Jannis
came off the 10-day IL around a week ago and tossed seven scoreless (0.00)
innings during a start for AA-Binghamton. Syracuse is starving for decent
starters and the Mets wasted no time here in promoting him to the AAA level.
He
threw eight innings of AAA ball last season for Las Vegas… 14.63.
We handed him the ball on Sunday and he gave up 14 runs in 3.1-IP.
Oh well.
Oh well.

P.J. Conlon was transferred from AA-Binghamton
to AAA-Syracuse. Conlon was a 13th round 2005 pick for the Mets out
of the University of San Diego. He will play 2019 as a 25-year old.
Conlon
has mostly been a starter all his professional career (5-seasons, 93-G,
66-starts, 3.51) who has thrown one scoreless inning so far this season for
AA-Binghamton.
My
guess is Jannis and Conlon will lead an overhaul of the Cuse rotation.
The
Mets placed RP Luis Avilan on their 10-day IL.
Coming to the Mets, via Atlanta, Dodgers, White Sox, and Phillies, he threw in
399 appearances for a 3.09-ERA. The Mets thought they stole the 29-year old off
the waiver wire.
It
hasn’t worked out well so far… 11-appearances, 9.28.
This
may be more that and IL move. This could be a banishment.

The
Mets recalled from AAA-Syracuse P Chris Flexen.Saturday
We’ve
talked often about Flexen and all the times he has disappointed us. The latest
was Saturday night when he was called in for the bottom of the 18th
with a one run lead over Milwaukee.
The
result?
Milwaukee
wins by one. Gone Sunday morning back to Syracuse.
RP Ryan O'Rourke sent from Mets to AAA-Syracuse. Had a 0.00 ERA for the Mets in two games this season. Go figure.
SPs Tim Peterson and Tyler Bashlor back to the Mets in search of a relief pitcher that will help.

Opinion –
The Mets pitching is bleeding once more. Management is floundering, looking for pitchers in the chain to help plug the holes.
The Mets pitching is bleeding once more. Management is floundering, looking for pitchers in the chain to help plug the holes.
Add to that the fact that the
potent bats have dried up.
You can’t make this shite up. Again.
Here’s the problem with that. That
approach seldom works because, if those pitchers were that talented at that
time of their career, they would already be in the majors.
Even when the current rotation is
throwing badly, it is still thought of as one of the best in baseball.
And the hitting talent is there.
It will return as soon as they stop pressing.
My solution?
Let the rotation pitch to the
maximum numbers of their pitch count limits, regardless of how many runs they
have given up. They are easily the five best pitchers the Mets have out there.
Use Lugo, Gsellman, Wilson, and
Diaz was your key relief pieces.
Fill in with Zamora.
Stop moving minor leaguers in and
out of the doors of the clubhouse. This rattles everyone for the wrong reasons.
Mack, I said it last year, too: if I am Jake and others, I try to figure out how to keep pitch count down by less Ks, more balls in play. If they can avoid the pen for an extra inning, their chances of picking up a W may spike.
ReplyDeleteMcGeorge was very good - likely tired in the 4th. Roseboom got in, and was not quite as good - but welcome back. A long time out for both.
One guy who finally returned for the Fireflies was Colin Holderman - check out his return for inclusion in the next Transactions column.
Flexen should never return to the Mets - until he puts together a hot streak of several starts to show he is improved. 65 runs in 60 career MLB innings is not a formula to win.
Jannis was horrific - but it is one game - shake it off. Move forward.
Avilan - Wilson - Familia: maybe their old clubs knew something the Mets did not.
Ryley Gilliam has had a few shaky games this year - but otherwise brilliant. May he rise quickly, the Mets Bullpen has a help wanted sign posted.
Just noticed: Jay Bruce 11 homers, 22 RBIs, .183. He has become Chris Davis. Except Davis is hitting .289 in his last 15 games, so that analogy may no longer apply.
ReplyDeleteMets not the only ones using the revolving door on pitchers - Braves have already used an astounding 23 pitchers.
ReplyDeleteMets? A "mere" 20.
The 1969 Mets used 15. All season.
Tom –
ReplyDeleteDidn’t Mickey tell us, after the 18 inning loss to Milwaukee, that Jason Vargas would have to be pushed to the limit of his pitch count so the team could get the rest in for the members of the pen that have been stretched to the hilt in this road trip.
So what does he do?
He pulls him after only four innings of work and a measly 50 pitches pitched.
50 pitches.
He was only losing 3-0 at the time. How many times have we said that, if you give up an average of three suns over seven innings… oh, screw it.
Why say it again. No one is listening to me.
I'm listening but sadly it "same old" Mack and you and I aren't getting any younger also Mack have you ever thought about WHY we picked the Mets all those years ago?
ReplyDeleteNY Post says Vargas was pulled due to "left hamstring discomfort". I think Tom may be on to something with Ryley Gilliam.
