Saturday, May 18 –

      Before getting into this weekend’s transactions and kudos, I want to make an observation about what I am seeing this season from the Mets.

      First, this is not worth a separate post here. I handle the transactions, do the kudo stuff, and breakout some key targets for the draft.

      And, if you have read my comments throughout this season, I have basically called for patience in a season that I feel is far too early to judge.

      But.

      I can’t say the same for our Manager and General Manager.

      I’m also a realist. Brodie’s going nowhere. I can just imagine the iron clad contract he put together for himself with these bozos.

      I can’t say the same for Mickey,

      There is no easy solution here. The injuries have piled up and there isn’t that much in the pipeline right now ready to step up. As Tom has pointed out, the Yankees don’t let injuries get in their way. We seem to do.

      Doing a full reboot won’t help either. Let’s say you successfully trade all your contracts for chips. Who is going to trade decent chips to the Mets? We’re the team that trades ours to them.

      But I will say this. I have come to believe that our manager doesn’t know what his next step should be. None of his moves seem to make any sense anymore. I don’t hold against him what names are written on the lineup card to start the game. We all know he didn’t determine what that would be.

      What I do fault him with is how he proceeds from there.

      Okay.

      Back to what I do around here…

     -AA-Binghamton places P Michael Gibbons on the 10-day IL

     -AA-Binghamton activates P Mickey Jannis from the 10-day IL

     -AA- Binghamton places OF Barrett Barnes on the IL as of 5-17

This is Barrett’s second trip to the injured list this season. As usual, the reason why remains stealth. Let’s hope the team’s leading hitter doesn’t remain out for long.

-AA-Binghamton activates OF Alfredo Escalera from the 7-day IL. Escalera has hit .100 in 20 at-bats for the Rumble Ponies so far this season.

     My guess is he will be miraculously be injured again when Barrett returns to the active 25.

    

           Kudos –

3B Dilson Herrera (.270) hit his 7^th home run of the season.

And SS Luis Guillorme (.286) went 2-4.

I still believe either (or both) of these guys could serve as adequate utility infielders in Queens if the powers to be there decide to blow up the ship.

-A+ St. Lucie prospect CF, Quinn Brodey, continues to heat up, belting his 3^rd home run, with two runners on.

I’m rough on my prospects. Brodey can do a lot more than hit .243 in the Florida League. I want to see more here.

-St. Lucie ‘blue’ prospect SP, Tony Dibrell, showed wildness (5-BB in 4-IP) but he escaped with 0-R and lowered his ERA to 2.21.

-Binghamton ‘blue’ prospect, catcher Patrick Mazeika, hit his 5^th home run of the season. That’s five homers in his last seven games. When was the last time the Mets had a catcher do this? Bueller?

-A-Columbia ‘red’ prospect, SS Ronny Mauricio went 4-5, R, 2-RBI and raised his BA to .283. He’s only 18 and playing against players that average over two years older than he is. He’s now hitting at a higher level than any batting average he has produced for any Mets team.

      There is no doubt in me that Mauricio will be on the Mets field in 2022. The question is, will it be as a shortstop, a second baseman, in center, or playing for another team against us.

Sunday, May 19^th –

       -A+ St. Lucie quietly activated SP Walker Lockett to pitch on Sunday

      -AA-Binghamton places IF Sam Haggerty (.277) on the 7 day IL. To fill this open slot, the Mets promote IF Luis Carpio (A+: team leading .330) from A+ St. Lucie.    

 

I love the Carpio promotion, but not at the cost of Haggerty, who has done a credible job in New York State. This move will also give Carlos Cortes (.264) the maximum amount of bats at a level he needs to excel in if he is to be taken serious.   

      Kudos –

-P Jason Vargas had a (sort of) good rehab start for AA-Binghamton: 4-IP, 1-ER, 5-K, but 3-BB.

-RPs Adonis Uceta (3.0-IP, 2.70) and Stephen Nogosek (2-IP, 0.95) finished it out with five shutout innings.

-Recent arrival, 2B Luis Carpio, went 2-3, HR (.667) in his first AA game.

What I love about minor league promotions is the fact that they usually get in the next game… not like when you are promoted to Queens and have to sit next to the water boy for what seems like a month or two

-St. Lucie RP, Thomas McIlraith goes 2.0-IP, 0-R, 0.00.

      I once had McIlraith as a prospect… we’ll keep an eye on him.

-A-Columbia’s RP, Andrew Mitchell, continued to pile up scoreless innings: 1.1-IP, 0-R, 0.92
