Mack - 2019 Mets Transactions, Kudos, and Comments

Tuesday, June 11th

P Blake Taylor was transferred from A+ St. Lucie to AA-Binghamton.

Taylor was a highly touted second round draft pick (51st overall) by the Pittsburgh Pirates and was traded to the Mets a year later as the PTBNL in the Ike Davis deal. He cane with a significant amount of control issues, which continue to be the concern (7-seasons: 1.48-WHIP).
Taylor has put up his best season this season at St. Lucie (21-apps, 2-2, 2.63, 29-K in 27-IP) though the 12-BBs he has given up keeps the WHIP high at 1.32.

Binghamton could be his last test to remain relevant with this organization.

AAA-Syracuse OF, Matt Kemp, placed on IL

P Jake Simon was transferred from AA-Binghamton to A+ St. Lucie.

Simon was a 11th round 2015 pick by the Mets, receiving a $400K bonus out of Ball (TX) HS.

He had immediate trouble getting out the gate (4.83-ERA in 2016, 6.02-ERA in 2017, 4.04 in 2018, and was pitching perfectly this season for Columbia 4-apps, 0.00, when he was promoted to Binghamton. One inning there (6.75) seem to have gotten the Mets to send him to St. Lucie which was probably the place he should have gone after Columbia.
He’s still only 22, but Simon may prove out that every HS player shouldn’t have money thrown at him to sign.

Three years in college might have don’t him much better.

      Kudos –

DSL-2 SP, Emmanuel Almonte: 3.2-IP, 0-R, 3-K, 1.35

DSL-1 RF, Freddy Valdez: 2-4, .303

DSL-1 3B, Wilmis Castro: 2-4, R, .429

DSL-1 SP, Joshua Cornielly, 5-IP, 0-ER, 0.90

AAA-Savannah rehabbing 2B, Robinson Cano: 3-3, R, 1.000

AAA-Syracuse SS, Danny Espinosa: 2-5, R, 5-RBI, 10th HR

AAA-Savannah C, Rene Rivera: 4-5, 2-R, HR, 4-RBI

AAA-Savannah RP, Ryley Gilliam: 1.1-IP, 0-R, 2-K, 0.00
This is Gilliam’s first AAA outing.

AAA-Savannah RP, Stephen Nogosek: 1-IP, 0-R, 1-K, 0.00
Trust me… Nogosek will be in Queens before this season ends.

AA-Binghamton 1B, David Thompson: 3-4, 2-R, .364

A+ SP, Ervin Santana: 6-IP, 0-R, 6-K

A-Columbia CF, Hansel Romero: 3-5, 3-R, .300

A-Columbia SP, Thomas Szapucki: 2.1-IP (40-pitches), 0-R, 2-K, 1.42

Szapucki continues his rehabbing with an increased pitch count up to 40. Keep an eye on the amount of pitches he throws. My hopes... 50 in the next outing.

           Kudos –

                 DSL-1 1B Cristopher Perez: 3-5, R

                 DSL-1 RP Carlos Castellanos: 2-IP, 2-K, 0.00

                 DSL-2 RP, Marco Villegas: 2-IP, 3-K, 0.00
This is Villegas’s third outing this year without giving up a run. So far so good.

A+ St. Louis DH, Carlos Cortez: 1-2, 2-R, 7th HR

AAA-Syracuse RF/1B Travis Taijerson: 2-3, 2-R, 14th HR

AAA-Syracuse RP, Chris Flexen: 2-IO, 0-R, 1-K

Chris pitched the 6th and 7th inning so this was definitely a relief appearance. Interesting.

A-Columbia RP, Tylor Megill: 2-IP, 0-R, 5-K, 0.69-ERA in eight games

The 23/yr. old McGill was an 8th round draft pick by the Mets in 2018, out of the University of Arizona.
He has now given up only one earned run in 13 innings pitched.
For some reason he started out this year in extended camp, after posting a respectable season for Low-A Brooklyn last season: 10-apps, 1-2, 3.21, 28-IP, 36-K
This raises his 2-season K total to 56 in 41 innings pitched.

  1. Tyler Megill looking great - big dude.

Ryley Gilliam may suddenly be closer to Queens - last 3 outings, 3.2 IP, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 BBs, 5 Ks. Very, very impressive

  2. Let's hope Cano packs his hot bat on his way back to Queens. The others have been in the walk-in freezer all season long.
