Mack - 2019 Mets Transactions, Kudos, and Comments

Thursday, June 13th

      There were no trnsactions

            Kudos –

                  DSL-1 SS, Luis Castillo: 3-5, RBI, .421

                  DSL-2 RP, Antonio Villalba: 0.00 (4-G, 9.2-IP)

                  DSL-1 RP, Jhonfran Escalona: 0.00 (3-G, 3.1-IP)

                        Two rules in International baseball.

1.  NEVER get excited about the stats generated there.

2.  If you can’t do that, NEVER get excited about the stats generated there early in the season.

Still, we use ERA a ways of following these pitchers, who may be throwing 43 MPH fastballs to kids like Jimmy Armet who lived down the street.

A+ St. Lucie LF, Blake Tiberi: 3-4, R

A+ St. Lucie CF, Jacob Zanon: 2-4, R, 5th HR, 3-RBIs

A+ St. Lucie RP, Darwin Ramos: 1.2-IP, 0-R, 0.84

IMO, Ramos is a small group of blue prospects developing out in the pens of the affiliates.

Past the three red prospects currently playing at the AAA level (Ryley Gilliam, Stephen Nogosek, Stephen Villines
        ), they are:

           AA – Joseph Zanghi
           A+ - Ramos, Andrew Mitchell
           A - Tylor McGill
           Low-A – Yeudy Colon

A-Columbia SS, Ronny Mauricio: 2-5, .288

Friday, June 14th

AAA-Savannah converted RP, Chris Flexen, was recalled by the New York Mets

AAA-Savannah RP, Daniel Zamora, was activated from the IL

AAA-Savannah RP, Ryan O’Rourke, was placed on the IL, retroactive to 6-13

A-Columbia transferred P Colin Holderman to the IL

Holderman hasn’t pitched bad this season (8-G, 7-starts, 3-1, 3.89… but his strikeouts are subpar (27-K in 34.2-IP, plus his 17-BB are far too high.

He started the season out fine… 7-ER in 23.2-IP (5-starts), but his decline especially fell on May 31st (4.1-IP, 10-H, 5-ER)

Then came Thursday night. He was pulled after giving up only one run in two innings and he was silently put on the IL list.

Further explanations about things like this never are released by the Mets so we will left to our imagination here.

A-Columbia transferred P Christian Tripp from Low-A Brooklyn to A-Columbia

Tripp is a relief pitcher out of the Univ. of New Mexico (2018: 21-apps, 2.33) who went 4.05, 1.30 for K-Port in 15 outings last season.

AA-Binghamton activated RP Ryder Ryan from the IL

Ryan excited us all last season when he pitched for St. Lucie (16-apps, 1-0, 1.77, 0.93). Lifetime (4-seasons) his minor league stat line is: 7-9, 4.04, 1.28, 138-IP, 159-K).

This is Ryan’s second time around for the B-Mets. I’m hoping for some improvement from the 24-year old (9-G, 2-starts, 6.91, 1.53)

            Kudos –

                  DSL-2 RP, Marco Villegas: 2-IP, 0-R, 0.00

That’s four games and 5.2 scoreless innings so far.

                        Low-A Brooklyn 3B, Nic Gaddis 2-4,R, RBI

Low-A 1B, Joe Genord; HR in first game

                        Low-A RP, Brian Metoyer: 1.2-IP, 0-R, 4-K

                        AA-Binghamton C, Ali Sanchez: 3-5, R, RBI

      A-Columbia RP Christian Tripp: 2-IP, 0-R, 2-K, 0.00

Saturday, June 5th

The Mets have acquired RP Brooks Pounder from Cleveland for cash.

      Pounder’s career stats are 3-2, 8.92, -1.2 WAR.

      Fits.

What exactly is our General Manager’s motive here? Sure, I know there aren’t that many decent relievers out there, and there are probably none currently on the market, but why does this guy keep trying to sell to us that someone else’s damaged goods are going to work for us?

We have three RP prospects in Syracuse. All are too inexperienced for now and two (Ryley Gilliam, Stephen Villiness) are going through pitching pains at that level. I think all three can be a big help come opening day 2020.

I am a big fan of Seth Lugo and I can live with Edwin Diaz and Robert Gsellman.

I also like the experiment going on with Chris Flexen

Adding Cory Oswalt to a similar role, when he comes off the IL, should also be considered.

Is this the world’s best pen?

Of course not, but it would be a hell of a lot better than throwing up the same failures back and forth on the Syracuse shuttle.

The Mets DFAd RP Hector Santiago

The Mets have optioned RP Tim Peterson to AAA-Syracuse.

  1. The big question is where would we be w/o Pete and Jeff a very scary thought. It's hard to admit but were a .500 club and even that might be tested in the next couple of weeks but as Met fans we never give up hope...well almost never. Mack what's your take on where McNeil, Davis, Frazier, Smith and lets not forget Lowrie play when Cano finally returns? Also is Nogosek the closest to ready reliever we have? By the way Happy Fathers Day .

  2. Thor out, "experiment"has to be over...Flexen probably starting, not relieving.

I saw Tyler Megill on MILB TV...throws hard!

I'd just call Gilliam up with Thor out, tells him to learn the hard way in the Mets pen.

Let's get our super top 4 picks signed...that would make me feel better about Brodie.

  3. Yanks get HR leader (21) Encarnacion from Seattle for a bag of used baseballs. Seattle is paying him. We got 3 HR Robbie Cano from Seattle for very valuable prospects, and we are paying his albatross contract.

Which trade is better? I'm stumped.

  4. Morning Gary

The Mets will always go with the money... thus, Cano and Frazier will be starters. Lowrie would be a UT infielder.

You can't take either McNeil or Alonso out of the lineup. If you did, fans would start throwing tea into the NYC harbor.

Dom would be our new LF. Nimmo could be out for a long time, and even then he would have to earn his way back into the starting lineup.

That leaves Davis odd man out.

    That leaves

  5. Gary -

IMO... Nogosek is the closest to be ready, but I would't rush any of the "Big 3" here (Negosek, Gilliam, Villines)

They need to mature and live through the occasional bumps in the road liek the ones both Gilliam and Villines have experienced in the past 10 days.

These three are the future of your pen... but 2020, not 2019

  6. Mack, how many minor league relievers did we hope might be ready - but haven't been. Love to rush the kids...but I agree...don't rush the kids.

  7. Tom -

I'm afraid we are talking to a rock.

    Try something different.

Keep the plans going to use Flexen in the pen. Great 2 inning guy.

Bring up the guy that through the same night last night as Syndergaard...

    Chris Mazza

And please... stop shuttling shitty relievers back and forth from LaGuardia to Syracuse. Start DFAing some of these guys.

  8. Mack - very true

Look back over the past 5 seasons at how many called up relievers the Mets have tried - almost all have failed.

Interestingly, Chasen Bradford is 7-0 in his after-Mets career, with a career ERA slightly south of 4.00.

I wonder if the Mets might go "veteran" on us and call up Ervin Santana, who went 6 scoreless for St Lucie on June 11.

  9. Mack, think we'll see Cameron Planck actually pitch this year?

  10. Tom -

Re: Planck - I don't know. I found it strange that he wasn't on the Brooklyn staff. You might want to ask Ernest. He's close friends with him.

  11. Tom/Everyone:

I'm open to a Santana move. Hell, I'm open to ANY move this year.

Folks, you can root as hard as you want, but this team just doesn't have enough leadership and talent to make it to the playoffs.

I love the core of young players but the contracts on the aging vets prevent this team from spending some hard cash for someone to help them.

The pen is a joke, the aging starters are beginning to show, and the management of this team is totally warped. Calloway's post game press conferences after a tough loss seem to be done after he goes out back and smokes a bowl of hashish. His actions border on criminal negligent.

I loved the Cano/Diaz deal when it happened but even that has come back to bite us.

Prospect wise, most are turning in bad nights lately.

What we need is an all-star break to he assess the future of this team and what direction to take it, The 'win now' plan blew up with the injuries to the aging contracts.

The team looked great in the off season. Almost a big name at every position.

And development fell in our lap when McNeil and Alonso proved the Top 100 rankers wrong. Dom Smith joined them as three guys that never were going to make it and all now have.

The shame is our system is so void at top talent right now, something that the addition of Kenelic and Dunn would sure be helping us plan for the future right now.

Folks... everything that is going on on draft day and in the levels are not going to prove out to be the right choice of the player... until around 2024.

    My call?

Clean out the shelves of as many of the contracts as you can, plus sell the guys that are going FA in the off-season. You ought to be able to get a few decent chips this way to add to your future plans.

    Past that, I can't say.

  12. Mack, two notes on Mets Minors prospects:

    1) Barrett Barnes hit well early, but last 10 games in AA? 4 for 33, 19 Ks

    2) Ryley Gilliam pounded again. Maybe he needs to go back to AA? What about finally giving Blackham a shot at AAA?
