Wednesday, June 26th –
The
New York Mets and 3rd round pick, RHP Matthew
Allen, have agreed to terms (still undisclosed).
With
the first three picks, they landed the 17th, 36th, and 13th
best prospect in the draft.
Allen
was the 13th and was considered unsignable by all the other teams.
The
Mets put a plan in front of him in which they would flood the draft with
seniors, thus, saving huge chucks of bonus money that could be tacked on his
slot amount.
Big
bold move that worked.
I
expect Allen will join Brett Baty and Josh Wolf for the GCL Mets.
The
Mets called up RHP Chris Mazza from
AAA-Syracuse.
I
like it.
Mazza
is a 29-year old journeyman (Florida, Minny, Seattle) who the Mets picked up
last year in the Rule 5 Draft. So far this season, Mazza, in AA and AAA, has
produced a stat line of: 3-5, 3.59, 1.16, with 65-K in 72.2-IP.
In
AA-Binghamton:
RP
Thomas McIlraith was activated of the IL
SP
Tommy Wilson was placed on the IL
SP
Harol Gonzalez is transferred to AAA-Syracuse
P
Jaison Vilera has been added from the Low-A
Brooklyn roster.
Four
interesting moves.
Gonzalez had a one game stint in Las Vegas the first time around (18: 1-G,
3.00). And has 11-starts (12-G) for AA-Binghamtonn this season (3.41, 1.14). He
deserves the shot.
Wilson
obviously landed on the IL after a horrible start on Tuesday.
Always
a big fan of McIlraith, Would love to see him return to prospect form
And,
the Valera move is ballsy. The 26-year old blue prospect has pitched at A+. A,
and Low-A so far this season and, in 7-G, 5-ST, has a stat line of 2-3, 6.16,
1.60.
Kudos

A
great AAA start for someone who is long overdo to pitch at this level.
So I guess if all goes as planned this might be the best draft in the teams history .... but then again we are talking about the Mets here
ReplyDeleteWe can only draft the best players available and hope they develop... I dont want this draft strategy every year since it could back fire badly but this was big coup... Lets hope that for once we win this draft and these top picks turn into the core of the next big team or used Properly for acquiring YOUNG STUDS via trade...
ReplyDeleteNow lets trade Wheeler, Vargas, Fraizer, Lugo and acquire 4 top 100 prospects... If anyone see any issues with this plan think Torres from the yankees... thats what we should be trying to do... If we really were bold we should trade Diaz too and make that 2 more top 100 prospects...
I'll take Forrest Whitley and Kyle Tucker from the Astros as a example for Diaz... Yes our Bullpen is awful but we are losing anyway...

ReplyDeleteThe key is whether or not they let these kids are grow.
The lower levels of DSL and GCL are stocked with talent right now. It will take until 2024 for all this to pan out in Queens.
I'm writing about this on Sunday at 8am.

ReplyDeleteYour plan is excellent but I would be very surprised i Jeff and BVW does this.
Yes, we have a bunch of players with bad contracts, but they definitely have some value to a team fighting for a playoff slot.
It is a new year for Harol Gonzalez - proud of him to bounce back from last season's horror, where he did not pitch well, but NEVER got run support.
ReplyDeleteMaybe he can outdo some of the Mets' relievers soon - it is a low bar to cross.
The draft trio, plus some of the young internationals, make for a promising outlook for those who are still Mets fans in 5 years. It is a very fine looking bunch...even without Kelenic. I am also hoping Mangum can be...the next Jeff McNeil. We'll see.
Eddie, no doubt Diaz is extremely marketable - highly effective AND cheap. he would be worth a king's ransom.
ReplyDeleteTom that's the point... to get a kings ransom... I want our torres... or that (really those) guy who analyst later say we got a huge haul for that ONE guy
ReplyDeletei just read the mariners were the 29th ranked team for prospects now they are top 10 (thanks to us of courses)
Why cant that be us... thats fast forwarding a future...
Shoot with Diaz pitching like he is, he may not be worth anything
ReplyDeleteSam Haggerty finally back and 2 for 3 in a rehab game with Brooklyn last night after missing a month. If there is a major sell off, maybe (if he gets back on track), he will show up in Queens later this year.
ReplyDeleteAllen get 2.5 mm. Im guessing he originally told everyone 4 mm then as the draft went along he decided that more he really didnt want to go to class and 2+ mm would be enough. Not that i blame him. To get more than 2.5mm you have to be drafted before the 27th pick, which might not be a guarantee next time around.
