Tony Plate - Mets Bullpen Woes

SAFE AT THE PLATE, WITH TONY PLATE

The NY Mets bullpen had their woes and had a very tough weekend in a four-game series against the St Louis Cardinals. The Mets only won one game and the bullpen took the loss in all three defeats. The Mets starting pitching was strong, but the bullpen could not hold it.

Manager Mickey Callaway was frustrated about the fact that his team put themselves in a position to win, but they didn’t get the wins as he liked. He thought they could’ve won the three games that they lost and had the chance to win four which needless to say did not happen.

The NY Mets have been searching for options to improve the bullpen. They are finding out that this has been a difficult task for the following reasons:

There aren’t too many trade options, they do not have that many elite prospects in their system to intrigue other teams to make a trade and now Craig Kimbrel is no longer available as a free agent, because he signed with the Chicago Cubs.

The Mets are concerned about the fact that Diaz has had several blown saves thus far. The Mets are also concerned with the performance of Jeurys Familia who has not done well and has continued to struggle. Some of the media think that the Mets need some help immediately.

In my opinion, the Mets would be fine with what they have, because it is still too early to panic. This is only June.

When you have a talented starting rotation like this team has, they will be in contention for at least a wildcard spot.

As for Diaz, I think he will be fine as the closer and anybody can have a few blown saves.

In other sports news:

The Golden State Warriors three-peat hopes came to an end as they were defeated by the Toronto Raptors last Thursday night 114-110 in six games as the Raptors captured their first NBA title.

I’m not taking anything away from the Raptors; however, if the Warriors did not have a depleted roster and if Kevin Durant was available, I felt that the Warriors would have won the Series. It was unfortunate that the NBA Finals had to be affected by the absence of a superstar.

It was unusual to see both Durant and Klay Thompson go down with serious injuries which will prevent them from playing next year.

  1. The time to panic was in 2017. What is the club waiting for? The Apocalypse? They have not fileded a competitive roster since then and it will be 2020 soon.

  2. Reese, my brother wanted (after the Diaz trade) Kimbrel and Andrew Miller.

How different would things look now?

    3rd worst bullpen in baseball.

  3. Tony, I think it was time to panic when Kimbrel was available. Sign him at all costs.

If I were him, though, I would have signed with the Cubs anyway. Too many weird things happen to the Mets.

  4. Our astute manager said last night after the horrible loss that he will continue to send out the same relievers until they get it right.

    Wow.

    First step in a rebuild?

  5. Mack, incredible - the only way some of these guys are relievers is when they go to the head.

  6. ramos is really not a great hitter and is a lazy backstop. The BP is ridiculous and they need to rebuild ,what they already gave away...
