OPEN THREAD - Huge Contracts that Bring Meh Results
The deals that Manny Machado and Bryce Harper were record breaking. How have they translated so far this season and how do their stats stand up to someone a lot of Mets fans have already given up (Michael Conforto)?: Machado: 370-AB, .268, 25-HR, 66-RBI Harper: 368-AB, .259, 17-HR, 70-RBI Conforto: 324-AB, .250, 18-HR, 49-RBI How would Mets fans have reacted had they handed out a $330 million contract to a guy delivering .258/17/70 or .270/25/66 for $300 million?
The numbers they're producing are solid if not spectacular. It's not like they've done a whole disappearing act like Robinson Cano. I think the fans would be OK but not doing cartwheels had they acquired either of the big two. The gesture alone would have restored a lot of long-lost fan support since it would have indicated a desire to win and pay what it costs to do so.
I'd have to consider it. Pitching is far more difficult to find than hitting, but Wheeler's a rental and Thor is good for 2 more years. Torres is good for what, 5?
I don't like to see long-term ten year contracts, if a player's stats are mediocre the fans will react to the player in a negative way, In my opinion A GM should not go more than a four year contract with a player.

ReplyDeleteI've seen very few long term contracts that made either the team or fan base happy.
ReplyDeleteThey are designed to put smiles on the faces of the player signed... and his agent.
I've felt that way for a long time. Ellsbury. Pujols, Cano, Stanton, et al haven't come close to the value of the contracts. Cano has come closest.
ReplyDeleteDifferent subject but would any of you guys do a Thor AND Wheeler for the Yanks Torres?

ReplyDeleteCould ya throw in Cano? Ha! Then yes.
