OPEN THREAD - Zack Wheeler

So, here's the question...

SP Zack Wheeler's contract runs out at the end of this season and he is eligible for free agency. He also is on the IL which has reduced his mid-season trade value.

What do we do with him?

1. DFA him and see what team comes back with the best offer?

2. Offer him a 1/yr contract at a level less than the QO offer would get him?

3. Let him move on?

  1. I don't think you have to DFA him. If he has a credible start this weekend you'll get a B prospect in trade. You can always sign him as a FA.

  2. I think all we can hope for is either another B reliever or a lower level blue prospect.

What around a straight deal for International money?

  3. Tony Plate commented as follows: Perhaps the Mets can acquire a top pitching prospect for Wheeler, not too many teams would be willing to pay a high price since he will be a rental, the Yanks are interested and they can use him to get by the Astros in the playoffs. The Mets and Yanks should do business with each other more often. The Mets have the starting pitching the Yanks need and the Yanks have the relief pitching the Mets need.

  4. He has said more than once that he likes it here and wants to come back next year even if he is traded now.
Trade him and re-sign him this Winter, unless he has a terrible finish to the season.

  5. I agree with Bill here - if he wants to come back, and would accept reasonable $$, trade him once he shows he is healthy in his next start.

May his next start be mind-blowingly great, and drive his price up.

  6. If we package him with Jacob Rhame, Ryder Ryan, and Eric Hanhold what could it bring back?

  7. John, about the same as they'd get for Wheeler, IMO.

  8. So now we should keep players because they like it here.

What did that get Wilmer Flores?

  9. No, we should keep him for his value. But I always prefer (all things equal) a player who WANTS to be here over one who only goes to the highest bidder.

  10. So by that logic, Bill doesn't like Jose Reyes.

    1. Correct! But I would like him as a MnL roving instructor.

  11. Simple...

Wheeler's contract runs out at the end of this season. He has shown marginal results for his entire career.

I was a big fan of his from the get-go but he just can't pitch his worth on paper. Yes, he has the velo, but that's it.

Some of his 2019 stats were in his favor, but they mean nothing since the IL visit.

He could pitch a no-hitter on Friday but easily follow that with giving up 5 runs in 4 IP.

Trade him for the best you can get... right now.

    1. Can't trade him until he pitches and shows he is healthy.

    Yes.

Late arrival to complete the trade that also brought Zack Thorton to us.

  13. How is it that Wheeler is not worth a top 100 prospect?
    That makes no sense...

If no one will send us a Prospect of that value then keep him and off the QO...
If he accepts them we do this song and dance next year... shoot he may start the season the way he ended last year, or he doesnt accept and we get a draft pick who could turn out to be a top 100...

its not like we dont have whole in the rotation next year so even if its 18 million we are used to over paying arent we?

  14. I realize he likes it in NY, however since he is from Georgia he might end up signing with the Braves in the offseason which will make the Braves a much stronger contender.

  15. Keep him and give him a QO if cannot resign. Makes no sense to trade him for a marginal prospect.

  16. Wheels good but not worth the QO price tag. Take the highest offer for him, move Lugo into the rotation for balance of 2019.

  17. I disagree, because Lugo is more effective in relief, they can call up Oswalt for the rotation
