Tom Brennan - BEST ROOKIE LEAGUE PERFORMERS

I LOVE GREAT GUPPIES!

The Rookie League Mets' Guppies have not played much yet, but I always like guys who can really produce, especially right out of the gate.  I like potential that shows RESULTS, baby.

So...who's performing the best through Wednesday, IMO?

I highlight my Fab 14 below.

For hitters, I like to look for high average, high power, and good Ks.  Pitchers, I focus on Ks, ERA and WHIP.

BROOKLYN:

SS Branden Fryman - Travis Fryman's son, the 21 year old was drafted in the 21st round and is playing like a 21st century All Star.  11 games, .400/.444/.500 with just 4 Ks, 4 of 5 in steals, 1 error.

2B Wilmer Reyes - for those who miss Wilmer Flores and Jose Reyes...the 21 year old in 15 G is doing a very nice .364/.379/.582.   WIL-MER REY-ES!!

1B Joe Genord - the 22 year old 9th round slugger in 22 G has a .282/.337/.551 split with 5 homers, exactly 5 more homers than Ike Davis hit during his season in Brooklyn.  23 Ks and 19 RBIs.  S..L..U..G..G..E..R.

P Daison Acosta - the 20 year old righty in 18.1 IP is 0.98 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, and 25 Ks vs. just 6 walks.  I asked someone if he is Brooklyn's best pitcher and he said, "It's as clear as day, son."

KINGSPORT:

C Francisco Alvarez is only 17 and in 12 games between Kingsport and the GCL, .349/.472/.605 with 12 RBIs!

GCL:

C Endy Rodriguez is 19 and in 11 games, is .343/.455/.486, and before that in the DSL, in 9 games, .296/.457/.667.  He has also thrown out 45% of base runners in his career to date.  He and Alvarez look like 2 bona fide catching hopefuls.

3B Jose Peroza - just 8 games in, Jose has hit not one, not two, not 3, but FOUR HRs and driven in 10 runs.  Having just turned 19, this 6'1", 215 guy may be one to watch.

P Jhonfran Escalona, 20, has been on the low end in Ks, with just 11 in 17 IP, but has hot allowed an earned run and walked just 3.

DSL:

SS Federico Polanco in 29 games? .355/.418/.512, just 16 Ks 25 RBIs.  Great name, great stats.

SS Cesar Berbesi in 29 games for the other DSL team is .310/.418/.372 with 16 Ks and 24 runs.

OF Carlos Dominguez in 25 games? .322/.431/.563 with 26 Ks and 25 RBIs.

P Jose Valdez - 1-0, 2.48, 21.2 IP, 29 K

P Ronny Ricones - 0-0, 1.93, 23.1 IP 14 H, 9 BB, 28 ks

P Antonio Villalba - 1-1, 2 saves, 23.1 IP, only 8 hits allowed, 10 BB, 26 Ks.

OVERALL: Some good looking talent seems to be emerging.

Let's see how that continues.

  1. Imagine how much better we'd have been had Alderson at one point blown it all up and allowed us to get the higher draft picks.

  2. I don't know if that would have made a difference given Alderson's drafts. Gavin Cecchini picked before Segar? Brandon Nimmo picked before Jose Fernandez?

  3. Liked what I saw from the Brooklyn team this year. They are a lot more aggressive on the base paths. They scored two runs in the first inning Monday just by being aggressive on the bases. Not sure if that is Chavez's or Alfonso's influence but it was a welcome site.

  4. John, good observation - Brooklyn's offense is up, up, up from other years, which is refeshing.

Those two draft picks were historically bad. But at least Cheech is back to playing in the minors again, regardless of what his future holds.

  5. A former Mets Guppy, Nabil Crismatt, has a 1.94 ERA in AA for Seattle this year, more than a K per inning, 0.96 WHIP. Success comes when you leave? Seems to happen a lot.
