OPEN THREAD - Joe Panik
We have a special text feed for all the Mets writers where we daily communicate with each other what we find out from scouts and other important people. We also just shoot the crap with each other throughout the day and one of the most divisive subject this week has been the signing of Joe Panik. Some love it while others loathe it. They, and you, get an opportunity to express your opinion of this 28/yr. old former All-Star (now you know what I feel) right here.
Of course it was a good acquisition. They added talent. A veteran player who has been there and shined on the brightest stage. It's adding Kelly Johnson, Juan Uribe type move. All the old options still exist.
Panik hits from the left side and that's a plus, the team is short in that area.
His glove plays.
I love Adeiny's glove, too, but he got ice cold at the wrong time. Wish he hit but it wasn't happening. Hopefully he'll have more opportunities. I don't think this is a case of Panik getting every start regardless of his contribution.
If he disappoints, Mets still have all other options available. They didn't lose a thing, only gained.
With new trading rules, acquiring ML talent will be almost impossible. Minor league depth, ready to step in, has never been more important. Mets still have Tejeda. I'm sorry, I know the stats, but I can't get all pumped up about him. I'm curious, and he might help, but grabbing Panik was an opportunity staring them in the face. Had to do it. The only issue will be playing time, which has to be locked into performance. Possibly a platoon at first.
Not for nothing, but it was Panik who get the hit in the 9th and should have been the runner crossing the plate, if not for Juan's failure to bunt him over.
If you asked me would I rather have Panik than Hechavarria, then the answer is yes. If you asked me if I'd rather have Panik than Guillorme or Herrera or Tejada, then the answer is no.
Honestly I'm not sure it matters. I don't think any of them are significantly better or worse than the other and that includes Cano. I expect all of them to be slightly below to slightly above replacement (though averaging to slightly below). Best case might be Lowrie makes a return and give you an offensive upgrade. I would have like to have seen Tejada get a chance I guess, he is still pretty young but I certainly don't feel strongly about it. I hope the Met talent evaluators know what they are doing...
Adeiny has been cut, so he is not an option. Picking up Panik is a great move. With the new trade deadline, the only players you can pick up is ones that have been cut be another team. Panik is an upgrade over Adeiny and Altherr.
McNeil got a chance to play at the ML level only because of injury and even after hitting the cover off the ball, the Mets did not believe in him and traded for Cano.
Now Panik will play over Guillorme, who in my opinon, deserved a longer shot to show if he can play at this level.
Mets had all but given up on Smith and he turned it around. Davis was gathering dust on the bench and look what he has become once given a proper shot at showing what he can do.
Guillorme has what? 150 at bats in 2 years?
Now, I am not saying that picking up Panik is not a great move by the Mets, but lets not forget why he became available to begin with.
To me if Panik doesn't start hitting within two weeks, the Mets should go back and play Guillorme.
Yeah good points Viper. I don't understand why people are enamored by Panik. The last time he was decent was 2015. He has a negative WAR this year and last. The years before that were mediocre. I hope I'm proved wrong of course. Is all the excitement really generated about the point that he is from NY??? With all options being close to the same playing a guy like Guillorme or Herrera does make sense.

One more comment:
ReplyDeleteBe interesting what Calloway does tonight against LHP Corbin.
I haven't looked at numbers, past stats, but if they are along standard lines, I'd sit Panik against the LHP and give the start to Adeiny.
But again, I didn't look at past performance against Corbin or delve deep.
I think it would be a good message all around for Adeiny to get the start.

Okay:
ReplyDeletePanik 1-13 vs. Corbin.
Adeiny 1-8.
Lagares always sucks. He's lost right now.
Out of the box: Altherr is 2-6 and finally stroked a double the other day. Could go with O'Neil at 2B and usu Altherr.
I doubt that happens.
I'd go with Adeiny, I suppose.
(Oh, and Tejada is 5-14 vs Corbin in his career -- for you Ruben fans out there.)

ReplyDeleteI am ready to PANIK.
ReplyDeleteIf Panik falters, we have Guillorme and (come Sept 1) Tejada.
We have entered the Panik Mode

ReplyDeletePanik is still a good defensive player & a good veteran presence in the locker room for a team in contention.
