PITCHERS I WOULD CALL UP SEPTEMBER 1

CALL ME UP....PLEASE!!

September 1 is the last time the roster will be allowed to expand to 40.
You can never have enough pitchers, so here are the five pitchers who I would promote:

1) Steve Nogosek: Simply Sensational in Syracuse - a great title for a song?

Nogosek has 22 outings spanning 30 innings in AAA, an ERA of 0.00 and 11 hits allowed.  Wow, Wow, Wow.  He's more than earned a call up.  A no-brainer.

2) Matt Blackham - Mighty Matt has 10 outings in AAA, and has gone 2-0, 1.35 in 13.1 innings, with an 0.98 WHIP.  Call him up and see what you got.

3) Tyler Bashlor - he as pitched pretty poorly in his call ups to the Mets previously, but in his last 9 outings in AAA since his last demotion, he has gone 9 shutout innings and allowed 2 hits.  He can do mop up duty, and if the Mets fall out of the race, give him one more chance to show if he is a future pen arm or not.

4) Corey Oswalt - he has really been dominant of late.  6-2, 1.67 in his last 10 AAA starts.  Maybe there is a bona fide 5th starter in this guy.  Maybe he has enough MLB time in to make the next time work.  I'd try to find out in September.

5) Mickey Jannis - it seems like he is making real strides - his last 4 AA starts?  Quite outstanding.

30 innings, just 4 earned runs allowed on 20 hits and 37 Ks.  His last two starts were 8 and 9 innings.  I wonder if he really might be becoming the next RA Dickey.  Give him a shot.

Either Way is Fine:

Tim Peterson I would not call up, but they might for mop up innings in games the Mets are losing big.

Non-Call Ups:

Ervin Santana - he might be useful, but I think he is not the same pitcher.  Mostly lousy lately. Leave innings to young call ups.

Chris Flexen - 2 recent good 4 inning outings in AAA, but I have seen enough of him in Queens, where he has gone 3-11, 8.07 in 68 career innings.  I'd pass.

Drew Gagnon - seems classic AAAA.  I wouldn't call him up.

Some call ups could occur after Syracuse finishes the playoffs, if it gets in.

A final thought - when you see that just these 5 pitchers could really deserve and warrant a September call up, excluding looking at hitters, the new 28 man September limit in 2020 to me seems ridiculously low.  It should be 30.  Period.

  1. Tom, at one time the 40 man roster could be used in September, plus April, and the playoffs.

  2. John, I hare it going to 28. The minimum should be 30. Cheap owners.

  3. Matt Blackham is number one. I would call up one of the starters only if they fall out of it and then I'd use Wheeler out of the pen.
