The New York Mets continue their manager search. They interviewed ESPN analyst Eduardo Perez and Arizona Diamondbacks vice president of player development Mike Bell yesterday.
Perez, who is currently a broadcaster is the son of Hall of Famer Tony Perez. He managed in the Puerto Rican Winter League from 2008-10 with Leones de Ponce and 2014-15 with Cangrejeros de Santurce leading his teams to league titles in two of those seasons.
Bell has been with
the Diamondbacks for 13 seasons, three of which in his current role. Prior to
that, he spent six seasons as the club’s director of player development overseeing
the minor league affiliates.
Mets quality-control coach Luis Rojas who is the only
internal candidate in line for the job has experience as a minor league manager
and coach in the organization interviewed last week. He is the son of former major-league
player and manager Felipe Alou and the brother of former Met player Moises Alou.
Most of the Mets homegrown players have played for Rojas such as Jacob deGrom,
Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil. Perez, who is currently a broadcaster is the son

The Mets are doing the right thing by interviewing all
possible candidates. A few have more experience than others such as Dusty Baker
and Joe Girardi who in my opinion should be the two frontrunners for the job. Baker
recently managed the Washington Nationals in 2016-17 and has 22 years of
managerial experience.
He has a career record of 1,863-1,636. Girardi has eleven
years of experience as a manager and won the World Series with the New York
Yankees in 2009. He has proven that he can handle the pressure of managing in New
York.
In other baseball news the Washington Nationals defeated the
St Louis Cardinals and their ace Jack Flaherty, 8-1, last night behind the
dominant pitching of Stephen Strasburg, who went seven innings and had 12
strikeouts and the excellent hitting of Howie Kendrick who had three doubles.
The Nats took a commanding 3-0 lead in games and are one game away from the World Series.

The Nationals starting pitching has been dominant throughout this series at one point going 21 2/3 innings in the National League Championship Series without allowing an earned run.
The New York Yankees and the Houston Astros will play game three of the American League Championship Series later today.
I'd want Baker over Girardi and anyone with minor league managerial experience over Beltran.
ReplyDeleteThe Cardinals cruise ship just rammed into a Strasburg and is taking on water fast, without enough life rafts. The Cards are sinking fast.
ReplyDeleteI'd be happy with a butcher, a Baker, or a candlestick maker as manager if the ultimate choice can avoid losing games like Mickey Throw Away.
That is great.
ReplyDeleteWe have more dead money and we are considering replacing our manager with a sports announcer.
GM - no previous GM experiece
FM - no previous manager experience
Lovely.
There's Joe G. & everybody else--no brainer IMO.
ReplyDeleteOK, a little interested in Bell. His grandpa an original Met who started in the inaugural game OF with the guy he had already been traded for (but he didn't know it). That's the only reason of interst BTW.

ReplyDeleteMack. You nailed it.
ReplyDeleteHobie, his great-grandpa is Alexander Graham Bell.
ReplyDeleteI liked Cool Papa Bell. He could turn the light off and get into bed before it was dark.
ReplyDeleteI think Girardi would be the best choice since he can handle the pressure of managing in NY.
