OPEN THREAD: Most Loved and Most Reviled: 3B
Reese Kaplan came up with a great idea for a series here. Who was your all-time favorite at a position and who was your most reviled. Next up... the home of David Wright, Robin Ventura, Howard Johnson, Wayne Garrett, Ed Charles, Ray Knight. and Bobby Bonilla, among others. 3B
While Wright is the most revered, the top 6 all time Mets at 3B in terms of games played all did well:
1. David Wright 1586 2. Howard Johnson 835 3. Wayne Garrett 711 4. Hubie Brooks 516 5. Edgardo Alfonzo 515 6. Robin Ventura 436
Three that got away could have given us great play while manning 3B: Jeff Kent, Justin Turner and Daniel Murphy.
These guys who played just 1 Mets game at 3B - not so much love:
154. Elio Chacon 1 155. Larry Burright 1 156. Gary Kolb 1 157. Bob Johnson 1 158. Phil Linz 1 159. Rich Puig 1 160. Ross Jones 1 161. Steve Springer 1 162. Jason Hardtke 1 163. Kevin Morgan 1 164. Manny Alexander 1 165. Shawon Dunston 1 166. Jose Valentin 1 167. Eli Marrero 1 168. David Newhan 1 169. Wilson Valdez 1 170. Andy Green 1 171. O. Quintanilla 1 172. Anthony Recker 1
Most reviled? After a good MLB start, Eric Campbell, who played 65 games at 3B.
BTW, two of the franchise's top sluggers got 13 and 12 games, respectively, at 3B: Frank Thomas and Dave Kingman.
most revered...Howard Johnson. I lost a lot of respect for David Wright when he was simply hanging around for the money when it was clear his body wouldn't let him play anymore. Fonzie and Brooks would be 2 and 3. Even Robin Ventura's brief stay would warrant a mention.
Least? Let's see....Roy Staiger...Bobby Pfeil, Jerry Buchek, Eric Campbell, Jim Fregosi...

Wasn't Roy Staiger on the Twilight Zone?
ReplyDeleteDavid was the only one to have an era--"the Dave Wright Era." As much as a liked Hubie & HoJo, Robin, ray & the Glider, they didn't define eras.
ReplyDeleteThe was no Cliff Cook era either.
