OPEN THREAD: Most Loved and Most Reviled: SP

Reese Kaplan came up with a great idea for a series here.

Who was your all-time favorite at a position and who was your most reviled.

Next up... the home of Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Matt Harvey, Dwight Gooden, Aaron Heilman, Ron Darling, Sid Fernandez, Jacob deGrom, Vinegar Bend Mizell, among others:

SP

  1. Seaver/Gooden ties for most beloved...Doc as such a sensation in 1984 and 1985, it wasn't even funny.

    Jake a close 3rd.

Most reviled: tie between Shawn Marcum and Ollie Perez. Both were awful as Mets starters. Mike Pelfrey 3rd.

  2. didnt see seaver but he is 1
i think Degrom has earned the 2 spot

Gooden has 2 of the best years ever but i dont think he did it long enough and the Drugs and his fall from grace gives the edge to degrom to me... But i could be convinced otherwise

  4. My first (Chronologically) favorite Met was Al Jackson. I see no reason to bury that memory with more recent super-stars--of which Seaver & deGrom would dominate.

This heresy, I know, but I can't forgive Dwight for blowing his career up his nose. Gooden & Straw should have been the Mets' Spahn & Aaron instead of flashes in the pan. Biggest disappointments IMO.

  5. Hobie, when Al Jackson was 8-20, with a real team, he might have been 20-8. They were very fortunate to have him.

  6. Tom Glavine for his mets finale will always have him near the top of my list.

Gooden/Leiter/DeGrom are the best. I was 7 when Seaver was traded, so I don't remember much of him in his prime.

Anthony Young was truly a tough luck pitcher who I had more sympathy than revulsion.

  7. Anon, Leiter was a real scrapper. Glavine seemed to lose his extra 6 inches of strike zone when he came to the Mets. If they used a computer to call balls and strikes back then, he would have had a very different career.

  8. This is a little off topic....

As I watch this game where Verlander gives up 3 runs in 5 innings against the Nats I'm reminded that DeGrom had a 1.88 ERA against the Nats this year over 24 innings. I also contemplate that DeGrom had to face better competition than Verlander(the AL West and AL worse than the NL East and NL) and is probably the best pitcher in baseball. Also thinking the Mets handled the Nats 12 games to 7 this year.
