OPEN THREAD - Tom Seaver, Randy Johnson, or Pedro Martinez?
Another excellent question from Tom... Who would you pick for his entire career if you knew ahead of their time what they can accomplish?: 1. Tom Seaver 2. Randy Johnson 3. Pedro Martinez And why? Rank the three in that regard.
It is impossible to not put Johnson as number one.
The next choice is a tough one to make. I lived through both these guys career and I give the edge to a guy that... I close my eyes... I dream that Game 7 is about to be played... and who do I give the ball to.
I'll make it three who put Johnson number one of that trio of incredible hurlers. For reasons of health I have to give the edge to Seaver but if Pedro was healthy and I had to choose, that would be a mighty tough call. I've never forgiven Seaver for losing the first game of the Series in '69.
Johnson #1, Seaver # 2, Pedro #3.
ReplyDeleteJohnson won 5 Cy Young’s, came in 2nd twice, had almost 5,000 Ks, including 372 in just 249 innings one year. An all time great.
IN SECOND AND THIRD PLACE:
I gave Seaver the edge over Pedro due to Seaver’s greater longevity...but in his prime, Pedro was as good as any righty - ever, IMO.
It is impossible to not put Johnson as number one.

Pedro.

ReplyDeleteReese, and what would have been the WS Clinching Game in 1973.
