OPEN THREAD - How Many Starters Does One Team Need?

The Mets go into the 2020 season with  4
starters...

They then sign Wacha and Porcello...

Brodie also said tha both Lugo and Gsellman are still being considered as starters...

So I ask...

What am I missing here?

Just how many starters does one team need?

  1. How many did we use last year, one in which there were very few injuries?

How many did most teams use? It seemed like the Yankees used 10 or more.

  2. Mack make a correction it’s 4 starters, now we have 6 with the addition of Wacha and Porcello

  3. I like open competition, personally.

Day One of Spring training, six arms for five slots and may the best five win, right?

The sixth arm will be a spot starter/long reliever......but as Bill says, how
many times does a team go through a season without needing an extra starter
    or two?

  4. The old axiom you can never have enough pitching always fits. The rosters are expanding to 26 this season and it seems most teams are carrying 13 pitchers, so having 6 starters and 7 relievers would be a good mix. Hard to believe Wacha is going to give the Mets more than 5 innings on a regular basis especially early so the extra arms are good to have. Currently, Diaz, Famillia, Lugo, Geselman, Wilson, Bach plus DeGrom, Thor, Matz, Stroman, Porcello, Wacha leaves room for Betances (maybe!) and sign some veterans to minor league deals to start in Syracuse as insurance. Good depth, but keep looking to add.

  5. Jeff, good stuff.

The last two seasons, the Mets got abysmal output from what I refer to as the subs and scrubs. It is important for a contending team to not blow starts with bad fillin starters and relievers. Let us try this approach...assuming, of course, that Brodie doesn’t now trade away a starter.

  10. 5 starters for 5 slots IS NOT DEPTH!
6 starters for 5 slots IS DEPTH!

Why are people not getting this?
    Or even questioning this?
