OPEN THREAD – STARTER COMPARISON

Here are three pitchers to consider…

          Rick Porcello                $10mil       1/yr            30/yrs        5.52

          Michael Wacha           $3mil         1/yr            28/yrs        4.76

          Madison Baumgarner   $17mil      5/yrs         30/yrs        3.90

So…

Should be happy with what we got for one year or mad at what we lost for five?

  1. Mack, The moves the Mets made are ok given the box that they have put themselves in and the Mets refusal to pay the Luxury tax.

But it was not hard to see this day coming. The Cano trade which will tie up over 10% of payroll fro the next 4 years is a killer. The failure to extend Wheeler will hurt next year. Not sure what the plan is but they need to seriously think of extending Conforto and then build the team around him, Alonso, McNeil, and JD Davis.

  2. John makes good points.

A lot, however, depends on how our next generation of starters in the high minors progress. Will they all be busts? Or, one two, or even three be competent MLB caliber starters by 2020?

If the latter, signing Bumgarner would have been a mistake.

  3. I prefer depth over a single addition, so long as the depth pieces are reasonably close to what the single addition will give you.

In this case, vintage Bumgarner is the better pitcher, but what version of him will you get? He hasn't been his dominant self in quite a while and my major concern with him would be injury and age related decline (over the four years).

I think we will be OK here with Porcello and Wacha.

  4. Guys -

    2020 will be posturing.

2021 will bring a new owner, a higher ceiling for the luxury tax, and a chunk of payroll taken off the books.

It also will bring Davis Peterson, Thomas Szapucki, and possibly Franklyn Kilome, Jordan Humphries or Kevin Smith into the equation.

It seems to me that 2020 will be the last year we will be less than thrilled with our 5-man rotation.

  5. I'm not "less than thrilled" with our rotation NOW!

    Who has a better 1-5 (or 6)?
